A few hardware questions

I kind of feel guilty coming back here to ask a question
after leaving, but I never really contributed much anyway,
and I dont know where else to ask.

Anyway, I have software for my computer and am looking to
get a midi keyboard to use it with. I am also taking a
class in a couple weeks which requires a midi keyboard. I
was considering this. However I am on a laptop,
and need a soundcard. Most of the descriptions for
soundcards are too technical, and I have no idea what the
hell most of it means.

Thanks ahead for any help.

if you need both a soundcard and a midi controller I think
that ozone thingie by m-audio is both in one.

other than that I'm not sure what you're asking.

Yeah, I am asking something like that. I want to get a
keyboard, but my soundcard is too shitty to allow me to play
on one without a significant delay.

The ozone looks pretty good, though, thanks much.

if you decide to go for separate ones, I have to say I have
an e-mu card and latency has never been a problem except for
with the software (the software can be slower than the sound
card).. I don't know how their pcmcia (or whatever that
laptop thingie is called) cards are, but I like e-mu.

i have an ibook and my soundcard has not been a problem with
a midi keyboard, i have an m-audio radium, yeah dunno what
else to say

Thanks, I think I will just get the keyboard first, and then
see if I need a soundcard. The one I would look at is
probably the M-audio audiophile. The E-mu card is probably
overkill for what I want.

get a good keyboard though, allot of those midikeyboards
have very bad keys to play on. try them out in the store if
you can.

m audio quattro is USB and has virtually no latency. it has
midi in out, as well as 4 1/4" in's and 4 1/4" outs. that's
what i use for my sound card.

You need a CME UF8!

I'm inclined to suggest the x-station here. They go for
really cheap used, they have a lot of usefull features
(soundcard, audio interface, effects processor, midi
controller templates, and a huge list of additional options.
They practically do everything
) and they are reliable
with a computer. Plus you get a synthesizer.

Thanks for the suggestions. The x-station is a little high
priced, and the quattro is now discontinued, but you've
convinced me to hold off a little longer. I'll keep an eye
out for used x-stations, though 300US is as high as I'd like
to pay at the moment.

i also have a quattro and it works great, but my keyboard
goes straight to usb so I dont usually go through that sound
card

Get one used. They will go for around 250-350, so if you
budget 300, you should get one eventually. I had one. Its
unbeatable for computer aided production (however, not great
for a "hardware only" setup)

I don't trust M-Audio, Alesis or Behringer, and I have been
starting to hear horror stories about CME too. In the end,
you get what you pay for, and if your going to save, it will
allow you to buy higher quality and more suitable equipment.

Oh yeah. The x-station gives you practically no latency.
Seeing as it becomes your soundcard, things are instant.
