For an audio interface, how does this thing compare to
firewire based audio interfaces? My laptop only does USB
2.0, it doesn't have firewire, so do you think it's alright
to get this thing? Or should I trade out this laptop for one
that's got firewire? Latency.. sound quality.. etc. I'm
really just trying to get audio in from the mixer.

It shouldn't matter too much. Although I wouldn't buy
m-audio. You never know, your DA converters could die after
three months or something.

I think the Audiophile USB is only USB 1.0 - most all USB
audio interfaces are - so it probably won't do 96 kHz in/out
at the same time.

I bought a little M-audio transit to use with my laptop.
It's lots cheaper, it's bus powered so you don't need yet
another power adapter, works fine at 44/48 kHz in and out.
Latency is not amazing - 512 buffers is the best it can do -
but it's a reasonable option for running line level audio
in. Works well with the asio4all drivers too.

Because of a problem?

i uninstalled the drivers, plugged it back in, it detects
it, installs the drivers automatically, i go into a program
that uses a midi controller (tried 2) and when i press the
keys etc, nothing happens! zilch! grrrrr, i hate computers
sometimes

its better to invest some money into those fancy PCMCIA
thingies, you an avoid latency issues with that. one card
goes into laptop slot, then your PCI sound card goes into
the one before and voila !
u can try docking station as well, theyre cheap and you can
stick any PCI card into it. of course that will turn your
laptop off mobile use, but u wouldnt record during running
anyway.

its deffos better than any USB or firewire which will give
you mainly latency problems. just try to run cubase or
similar thing, you'll seee what im talking about.
no difference between firewire & USB although the second one
is generally easier in use.
and no, it doesnt have an impact on sound quality, at least
not the one u could hear.
+ watch out as some USB interfaces have problems with
applying ASIO or KX drivers to them - guys at KX specified
some USB interfaces that WONT have drivers written for them,
so check that first.

check the software and if the controller sends the signal on
the same channel that software recieves it. it has to be the
same, eg 01-01.
i would say thats the problem.

i've tried reason, floops and another one which came with
it. this did only start happening though since i installed a
different motherboard bios. i'm too scared to downgrade it
tho

bios has nothing to do with it. as far as i know, reason
allows u to set up the channels and thats it reallu. if u
connect it through USB ( and i assume u do) make sure its
USB 2.0.
1.1 would e enough to reckognize it, but not enought to
transmit it. so one to go.
secondly - if u tried all the steps from all manuals etc -
seems like theres a problem between a PC and machine. i
suggest using any other controller on the same settings, or,
taking your midi to friend with different PC.

on to pof that - what controller is it ?

unless, theres something in BIOS about audio outs and sound
in general, but i have no clue on that, never sticked my nose
that deep...

USB 2.0 Is meant to be quicker than firewire, but its just
never beaten it in benchmark tests. I doubt you'll see a
difference though.

I may be wrong.
