Sometimes people write "this or that artist/genre is sooo
2001" (because they want to feel modern and avantgarde?)...
but, what is "so 2006"? ..dubstep is "semi-new", but sooo
2003.. what about 2006???

No, it's mostly good, because it has no defined sound. Check
out Burial and Kode9, they're awesome. It's sort of like the
next logical step on from Grime.

Yeah, but it's changed so much since all the 2000 Zed Bias
style post-2step stuff, now it's taken on grime and idm
influences and come out the other side as a completely
different genre. A lot has changed over the last six years.

..nothing new since dubstep? ..I'll go to sleep (music-wise)
then, and wake up in like 2 years and see/hear if anything
new has happened..

..untill then I'll listen to good old IDM (soo 90's) like
the new VSnares (Cavalcade..) which is somewhere between
"amazing" and "sooo 200x" and "rhythmic parady of himself,
as usual" :p

No, the word "Dubstep" was describing 2step records with a
dub influence in 2000.

In 2006, the term is being used to describe music that has
very little to do with that scene. It's more a case of
"post-grime".

offline morphuze from Denmark on 2006-06-19 14:31 [#01923367]

this thread is not about "my liking" ;) ...I just want to
know if anything new has happened this millenium, besides
dubstep..

..lotsa music sounds "new" to whoever it's "new" to (like,
Arab On Radar could be "new" to those who don't know) ..but
it's not "objective new", or whatever the correct word is ;)

QUALIFIES AS SMASHING THE SYSTEMS ALL TO LITTLE BITS WITH
THE POWER OF MYSPACE AND SOUNDING LIKE A SLIGHTLY FASTER
VERSION OF SHED SEVEN.

Like I said before ; a person can discover somthing OLD but
"new" to that person, but not "objective new", like
acid-house were new in 1988, but not new in 1995 when some
other person discovered it..

..tell me about the ""new"" things you discovered this
year.. (I discovered dubstep, but would'nt dare call it "the
latest news in 2006" as an objective truth) ;P

Things that have been done to death:

Acid House
Breakbeats
Rock 'n' Roll
The 60's
The 70's
Punk
Drum 'n' Bass

Things that still have plenty of life in them:

Handbag House (You sure make me feel like lovin' you!)
R'n'B beats
Power Ballads
The Late 80's
The Early nineties
Yuppies
Two-Step (Come on, that's a fucking world of possibility and
none of you can be arsed.)
The whole 8bit thing

do musicians care about genre themselves? I really never
think about, and rather go by what I like. In most cases,
this is some form of hip-hop, jazz or "electronic," but I
listen to some other stuff as well.. when I'm making music I
have no control over what comes out until its finished...

agreed.

when im working on a track, i hardly have a genre in mind.
actually, i hate calling my music any kind of one genre, so
i make up silly names like 'broken breakbeat ambient drill n
step'

offline morphuze from Denmark on 2006-06-19 17:50 [#01923482]
Points: 278 Status: Lurker

ohhhh kaayyyyyy, never mind, forget I asked (and I can read
between the lines, "nothing new in 200x", see ya next year,
or millinium) ;p

..I know all the "genre problems" and that most/alot of
musicians/composers don't think about "genres" (or pretend
to not think about it) but that does'nt mean genres does'nt
evolve.. and it's somehow more easy to talk about music
(especially evolution) when using genre-names.. (hm, or
maybe not... when reading this thread) :/

the only kind of classification I do is that if I listen to
a track when it's finished or I'm, like, halfway in or
something and go "oh, this sounds like [artist name]," I'll
tell people it sounds like [artist] and some times even add
that artists signature moves to the song just to fuck with
it...

genre names are mostly redundant and nonsensical anyway.. I
particularly dislike that electronic music is its own thing
when most electronic songs would be normal songs within a
different genre if played on acoustic instruments instead of
electronic instruments.. imo, the instrument shouldn't
decide the genre of a song if we were to use genres to
classify them...

offline morphuze from Denmark on 2006-06-19 18:14 [#01923491]
Points: 278 Status: Lurker

hm, ok, the "casual electronica/IDM artist" could be making
tracks in the "timeless" sense.. like "I don't care if it
sounds like the 80's or 90's with twist" ..but when people
write something like "this is so 2001" that imply that they
think about electronic music as being "inovative and
evolutionary with a sort of timeline", and that's the
timeline I'm focusing on.. (oh man, I feel like I'm
explaining something obious) :p

..but it seems like the timeline is not as straight anymore,
like it was before 2000..

Let's pretend we're in 2100 and writing an article about
"the history of electronic music" ..then it would be easy to
describe the 90's jungle/d&b, goa/trance, hardcore/gabber,
idm/electronica, etc, but the 00's would be only
dubstep/grime? .....and/or something about
"post-electronica", like ; "the artists then started to
blend genres of the 90's and try to be inovative that way,
but did'nt really create any specific new genres or
movement"..
