Look, Will Oldham has been making awesome folky records for about fifteen years, people have only really been paying attention for the last six. Harmony Korine is basically the same but with films and writing. If lots of trendy hipster types like em, that's not their fault.

I like Indie music. It's as meaningless as a term as IDM yet far more inclusive.

most genre names suck
especially electronic genre names as the music called "electronic" is usually just normal music played on electronic instruments.. if I make blues with electronic instruments, it isn't blues, it's electronica. annoying.

There was a beautiful moment around 2000 when it looked like indie music was gonna die, NME nearly went bust (melody maker did), the 2step sound was smashing up the charts, electronica was looking like it might break and be the next prog rock...but then the fucking Strokes and White Shites came out and ruined everything.

There's a great track on SVC today, The Indelicates - We Hate The Kids, which basically, presents a very compelling argument for putting an end to music.

I think the whole idea of hippie/punk musical rebellion is stupid anyway. And it's been completely assimilated by Kapital over the last 20-30 years, it's just a money spinner now. You need smart, witty, inventive musicians now, who are more into Richard Dawkins than Che Guevara, and look at guitars in the same way you would look at a 16th century lute, as an anachronism.

the best way to criticise the music industry is by making and endorsing music so bad it wouldn't get signed in a million years unless all other people die
