i'm liking it. it's super straight and normal, stripped down. very nice sonic pensioners.

Is it available in shops yet? I've been to a few over here and they all say it's not released until 30 June. Sonicyouth.com says it's been out since Tuesday, though :/

IMO, it's not better than the excellent "Sonic Nurse" or "Murray Street" - too many of the new tracks are a bit too simple and without depth. "Reena", "Rats"(the best of them all) and some of the others are great though.
I miss Jim O'rourkes production and mixing a lot - the last three albums were all full of great songs with really good sound/mixing/production. (me coming from electronic music, I liked the equal balance between all instruments in Jims mixes - drums were as important as the guitars.)

reena is great. the rest is good too, it's a good album, but i'm kind of frustrated with their latest sound; very mellow, very happy, very self-assured, too much of those three for me. i barely listen to 'sonic nurse' anymore and i don't think i'll buy 'rather ripped'... since it leaked i have only listened to it once in its entirety.

i think alot of the noiser direction is being channeled into SYR and various side projects and improv stuff. this months wire article on them notes that the album was done really quickly, like 2 weeks or something which would explain why it's so immediate. i know their geffen contract is up for renewal too which might be a cynical reason for such a digestable album but i think it's a nice change. as for jim o rourke, i reckon he's on far too many albums already anyway.

ugh... i am so glad o'rourke is gone. it's like they were taking a nap since murray street and now they're awake again. this is their best album since a thousand leaves, by far. i was so bored with those long-winded mellow songs.
