I can say this, the title of the book can be misleading.
The intro of the book tracks the explorations of an
otherwordly being on an anthropological mission who finds
himself gathering information on a planet called earth.

Just as the concept of "love" is strange for this being, so
is the idea of "Art" when first introduced. Several times,
the author retells the arrival of this being as he is
exposed to what Art means c/o a different representative of
each art movement (from the late 1800's to now.) Obviously
each tale provides an extraordinary philosophical worldview
that competes with the others.

It's a really interesting approach towards framing the
trajectory of Contemporary Art through Modernism,
Post-Modernism, and Now.

And this is just the book's Introduction chapter!

Well in his defense, the book was released on MIT Press and
the author has written for Art Forum on several occasions.

I confess I didnt make it through the whole book (because of
other reading obligations), but I found the first 100 pages
very impressive.

I think the greatest, truest and purest form of art is where
the artist and the art becomes one and is removed from any
pretention and motivation outside itself. That must be most
difficult and challenging but i think Jandek comes
pretty close.

I think there has to be another renaissance type event.
Maybe this won't happen until after we're long dead. The
trouble with living after the arse end of the 20th century,
we all expect total innovation NOW.
