I've listened to Beirut - Gulag Orkestar and it sounds quite good.
Even though Pitchfork has a lot of pretentious and condescending reviews and articles I've found a lot of good music through that site.

for every bloated overwrought pitchfork review, theres 3-4 that are normal and go about their business like any other review site or magazine, so the hatred is kinda silly. they do shit reviews (mostly up until david cross' top 10 list), but at least pitchfork manages to get some of their facts straight, unlike a lot of review magazines out there--who literally just read the press sheet, listen to the album, do no research, and make blind guesses. most press sheets contain a lot of over hyped and often times false information to pump up the interest in the cd/12". and then the reviewers conjure new things up to make their reviews more interesting, based solely on the false press sheet. in respect to this, pitchfork are actually batting a better average than most sites/magazines besides stylus.
when they try to get clever and literary, thats when they suck the most, because they are no good at it and they should be just reviewing albums normally. but i haven't come across one of those reviews in awhile, so thats a relief.
BUT the booka shade album is good. if you dont like house though, don't bother.

the pitchfork fans are god awfully annoying also. they base their entire music listening experience off of the ratings system and reviews. its depressing.
so a lot more people hate pitchfork for that too.

Haha, man that's a fucking crazy artist.
He's a 19 yr old Brooklyn chap, but sounds like he's a 50 yr old guy in Tsarist Russia. The stuff I've heard is excellent :)

pitchfork's best new music section is reasonably reliable... if i've ever grabbed something because of it, it was a long long fucking time ago, but all the same...

no thanks. i used to read album reviews in music magazines for a while once. but they used to keep me away from good albums - very often. so i got pissed and stopped reading them.
now i usually rely on what my mates recommend me.

The Matthew Herbert album is pretty cool. When I saw Danielson live I thought he was pretty ok as well, though that doesn't mean that this new album is good.

Figurines sounds like Built to Spill. Danielson is over hyped. Mission to Burma is thick.

I enjoy Pitchfork, in the very least b/c they tend to straddle that slightly rarified line of populist with a taste for what's on the periphery. Nonetheless, they can be strangely negative. And pretentious.
In all, though, they're more typically thoughtful and creative than most others..
I've always enjoyed this Amon Tobin review: http://tinyurl.com/rlavs
It's fun, I think.
