yes, i know plants are living beings...

at first thought, it can make you wonder whether the line
between alive and non-alive is really that obvious and
definite... and if you extrapolate + think about other
things, whether the line between sentient and non-sentient
is definite or not. (how are, for example, worms sentient?)

offline Ezkerraldean from the lowest common denominator (United Kingdom) on 2006-05-30 08:06 [#01909757]

there are varying degrees of
sentiency/consciousness/intelligence. its not just conscious
/unconscious. babies are not conscious beings, the
consciousness develops over the first few years. a newborn
baby cannot make its own desicions

Fact: Venus fly traps aren't much cop if you actually want
to catch flies (unless you have loads of them).

For catching the small flies that houseplants seem to bring,
you're far better of getting Drosera Capensis (even if it
looks the most boring of all meat-eating plants).

When I used to work with a gardener there was a bloke there
who reckoned that they were sentient beings and a "higher
form of life" (than humans).
