don't know anyone in real life who enjoys to idm

I don't know anyone who does or who will. My girlfriend
listens to my stuff and whatever I have on when she comes
over but no one I know is really into it, and I think its
having an adverse effect on my music making. I mean I've
been doing it since I was 10 and I've only completed about 8
tracks ever and they all sucked. So I'm also wondering if
I'm just fundamentally shit.

Tear jerker: I had some AFX coming out of my laptop once
when I was still at uni and a few people were "what the fuck
is this shit"ing, and a game geek asked me if it was a mash
of random computer game sound effects.

I'm pretty sad about it knights!

if you don't enjoy making music, don't do it. if you enjoy
making music, keep doing it. the only way to improve is by
doing. that's all there is to it.

the next time someone makes fun of aphex twin, tell them to
fuck off and threaten to steal their lunch money.

I very much enjoy making music, and you know what you said
actually made me feel a bit better, thank you.

I'm going now to buy another cheap midi interface.

electronic music is a hard thing to find common in other
people. I think its cause many people don't push themselves.
Its weird music and that all there is to it.

Weird? I'd rather refer to it as unorthodox. I think it's
weird how satisfied the mainstream is with rehashed music
that isn't evolving whatsoever.

As for me, I have a few friends into experimental electronic
music, a few more who won't go past robert miles/warp
brothers/darude mainstream electronica, and many more who
hate electronica all together.

why weird?

majority is extremly boring though and that brings bad light
to all of it unfortunatelly.

I listen to all sorts of music but I find the majority of
mainstream music frustrating in how bland and unimaginitive
it is. Although, I think that music can be inherently
good/bad no matter what the genre.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2006-05-26 23:39 [#01907689]

yeah. majority of every genre is complete crap, it's just
that with electronic music there's much more of it because
every kid with a computer wants ot be a musician.

if you want to meet 'likeminded' people, go to a gig
showcasing an idm-act. simple, depending on where you live
though. so the next question is: where do you live? (you
don't have to answer. i'm not interested. just trying to
keep the convo going...)

I'm a few months off 21 right now. But I'm in the process of
slowly putting together a studio.

Also, next month Luke Vibert and his chums are doing
something here in Australa so I'll see that and socialise a
little.

it's a shame we didn't live closer together when I was
living in sydney,

I've been backpacking around australia, and suprisingly I
found perth to be the major centre of idm fans/gigs, but
that was more likely the circle of friends I was around when
I was living there..

just convince yourself you're above everyone else and their
crappy music taste, even if its a lie, it'll make you feel
better about yourself.

Its funny. People perceive what they like to listen to as
being the most interesting for various reasons. But what you
listen to would seem boring to them, and vice versa. That
being said, I have heard much more innovative music and
production in pop music in the last year, then I have in
IDM. It was fresh for a while, but now that there are so
many sophisticated audio plugins out there that autoglitch
and resonate everything to beautiful richness, it seems that
everybody is making the same few songs.

That is one of my arguments against software right now. Its
homogenizing everything by making certain effects so simple
that everybody is doing them. In that kind of a musical
environment, there will be nobody to stand out, because
everybody is going to be capable of the same kind of music.
In this, IDM is no different than trance anymore.

I think a lot of people into rock would actually quite like
IDM, seeing as a lot of Kraftwerk fans are into heavy rock.

Refund, how have things been? What are you up to nowadays?

xf, I'm in Sydney so if you end up going to that one let me
know.

I agree to an extent about software homogenising music, but
it can help people with a limited amount of money/space to
learn and create. Also, both hardware and software can
produce interesting and creative pieces of music or sound.
But I don't really like to argue for one or the other, I
don't think that either one is any better or worse than the
other.

i don't really know anyone who likes any sort of electronic
music either, but i don't really care much about it. i have
headphones. people may think i'm weird for listening to
boards of canada and aphex twin, and i can think people
weird for listening to whatever they listen to, and that's
fine with me. for example, one of my friends listens to the
used and blink 182, and i abolutely don't like any of it,
but i don't think she's any less of a person just because of
that fact. just that she has terrible taste in music.

i think older people dont mind some of the more ambient IDM
- BoC and the tamer aphex and autechre. but barely anyone
old likes drill-and-bass etc. my parents cant stand mu-ziq
or squarepusher
