I use dBpowerAMP to play my mp3's and nearly always have it
set on random play. The only problem is it's NOT random.
It seems to play tracks out of a few folders and then slowly
moves onto others. It's hard to explain, but, for example,
it's played two tracks from an Aoki Takamasa album (Indigo
Rose), with a couple of Aphex tracks in between, and it
plays a lot of Nick Drake (more regularly than it should,
given the % Nick Drake I have)....... maybe someone can
explain this? Maybe not?

Either way, I made a thread about it :)

Have you heard Aoki Takamasa & Tujiko Noriko's album '28'?

my random thoughts on the subject:

- random is made with some strange math algorythms, the
better the player the better math behind its random,
methinks.

- i use winamp and you can adjust its level of randomness in
playing - so i set it on max randomizing

- dBpoweramp can be used as a player ?? i didn't know about
it, i use it as a [very good] ripper/encoder/decoder.

when i use the random/shuffle mode in itunes, some tracks
seem to play much more often than others too...

Maybe it has something to do with fragmented files. Perhaps
it will play tracks that are easier to locate in a root
directory rather than ones that are scattered. That could
explain it.

there's a preference somewhere that makes itunes gravitate
towards higher rated tracks (and i think it goes for
more-played tracks too)

I started using it as a player after a recommendation from
XLT. It's very simple, with a basic interface I like and
without to many functions to clutter things up. I find it
simpler than WMP and less resource hungry than winAMP......
although I don't think it can play steaming content (I still
have to use winAMP for that). It's a seperate app to
dBPoweramp Music Converter.

Gwely: Yes, I have 28........ indigo rose is probably my
favourite release........ really, really good stuff. And
your fragmented file theory would make some sense. I know
it's very hard (impossible??) to get a truly random
function, but I do think they could do better than what they
have at the moment...... I don't want to use WMP. And there
are no options to control random play......a downside to
using a simplified player

I think random play should be set by chaos mechanics......
i.e. you play too much aphex twin : there's a typhoon in
japan

i usually just use my bare hands to play with my steaming
content
