Hello to all avid (sexy) music listeners.

I've been working on this one for about 2 months now. I've
worked it and re-worked it and have finally decided to let
it be judged by the savage public. Criticism (as always) is
welcome. This track is no way a closed case. I'm more than
happy to make adjustments. Please have a listen, and I will
be sure to reply to every post!

Just listened from start to finish...it all left me a bit
cold. It had a bit of everything expected from this style
of track but it didn't grab me at all. Could just be a mood
thing though (as in I am in a bad one). I will listen again
in the morning.

That midi piano sound doesn't do many favours.

at which point? i didn't actually use a midi piano or any
piano of any sort, but i would like to know at what point
you heard it so i can change it.

I really don't feel your drums at all. Too clean, no energy,
and a lot of patterns I just dont like. Generally the
structure of the track lost me, a few times it seems like a
little synth part comes and goes and then another one
starts, and then the drums change at an arbitrary point. I
think you should focus on the drum programming, make the
patterns more fluid and try to tie them in better with the
rest of the track, so they hold it all together

Um, pretty much from 00.30 until about 2 minutes in. It
might not be a piano, but my PC Speakers are saying "Midi
Piano" at this point.

I love you for your interest. After the GLUT of Ape things I
came up with the idea for more danceflor orientated things.
Bearing in mind I'm no more likely to hit the dancefloor
than a child, it just perpetuates the charade that is my
life. However, I came up with a new name "The Art Class" and
I have started two tracks, unfinished a la Cygnus, chiefly
being Happy Shopper and Star Burger and one that I
attributed to Ape that I want to wrestle back to Art Class
as I like it Track One

it sounds like a piano. a really thin piano.

Just to let you all know, here's what i'm going to change:

[-] Tweak the EQ on the beats and some other stuff.
[-] Remove some of the pointless leading synths.
[-] Work on the beats. Make them fit together more nicely.
[-] Remove the random tempo change near the beginning.
[-] Edit one of the synths towards the end.
[-] Make the ending more interesting.
[-] Generally just add more soul to it.
[-] Change the "thin piano" as qrter put it.

i was thinking "oh, this is cool, what's everyone
complaining about?!" until the harpsichord/piano-thing
entered. then it just got retarded. i really like the
percussion work, but the piano needs to go or drastically
change sounds. i'd also like a lot more melodic variation
and pattern variation. go a bit nuts! otherwise, i quite
like the soundscape you've got going here. nice one!

dog_belch, i'm gonna listen to your tracks

fuck, that "star burger" track is the musical definition of
blue balls... finish it or ... well, internet threats don't
weigh a lot, so i'm just going to beg; finish it, please!

happy shopper takes a more primal, instantly gratifying
turn. very nice, distorted drums, just the way mother used
to make them. i've noticed very few take the distorted path
except for hardcore techno wankers, and it's a style that
should be employed more. lovely ambience here too, floats
very well. it's all a bit droney and tribal, but uniquely
so. needs to be longer as well, but i know you're not in it
for length.

then the ape track. holy shit, the distortion hits right
away! no warnings. a cascade of noisy pads and a shy, almost
inaudible beat. it's this take no prisoners attitude that
makes me adore the ways of the ape so much. i especially
love that noisy bit that filters in and out of the mix,
fucking excellent. the harshest of the three, but also the
best. there's no defeating the ape.

Lots of critisism in this one, but you asked for it.

The drums are too loud. You don't really feel like cranking
the sound up, and listen to it loudly. I actually think the
sounds are really good. Not hearing midi keyboard at all.
Quite like the bass that comes in at 2:12. Hating how you
change the volume of the already too loud drums. As Dannn is
saying, i think theres a lack of structure. After listening
i didnt really want to listen to it again. The melodies
sound like something randomly put in. Its like a journey
trough all sorts of moods, but not really going anywhere. If
somebody was mixing it live, i would think it was ok, but as
a listening track, i need more structure than this. But some
of the beats are definatly dope, not doubt about that. Thats
all i can think of right now.

Just spent about an hour working on it. I don't have the
heart to remove the "thin piano" (and I also decided that I
seriously have no problem with that sound at all. In fact
I'm really quite fond of it) - nothing else seems to go. I
feel like it's improving though.

[TRACK UPDATED]

This is about as much as i'm going to do to it. It's got to
a point where I'm going round in circles now.
I've done a few things. Made the beats quieter. Added extra
beats. Adjusted the EQ on lots of stuff. Taken away some
crappy stuff like the leading in basslines. Taken away one
of the tempo changes near the start. I kept the "thin piano"
cos i like it and all your speakers must be shite. I changed
some of the synths near the end, and lots of little other
tweaks.

Time to move onto something new now.

Razor - I liked to abstract and ethnic feel to the melody,
some of the filters threw me off a bit.. I didnt fine as
many problems in the programming as other people did, maybe
thats cause my drum programming is much less fluid and much
more sparatic. I definitely dug that new synth that came in
mid way.. the second half of the track is much better imo.

I think some of the tracks on there are better than what was
uploaded here. I think you have some nice ideas and good
sounds. But for me, i need more structure. It seems all your
songs are always just changing direction all the time. It
would be cooler if you went back to some of the themes
earlier in the song. Would be more satisfying for the
listener. I sort of like Frantic pixel. You need some
different drum samples i think.

Yeah I understand what you're saying. I've got 6 drum sample
cds arriving soon, so i'll have lots of fresh sounds.
Structurally, I have tried lots of other styles in the past
(listen to "Badmo", "Slightrings" and "Rapid Flapjack") but
the way i'm doing it now is the way i like it. that may
sound stupid, but i make music for fun, and when i'm making
it for myself, that's when i really love it. thanks for
taking the time to check extra stuff out. it's greatly
appreciated!
