what makes it?
i reckon:

Money - or at least, enough money so you dont have to worry
about it

Friends - plenty of people to talk to and have fun with

Stable relationship - for company and have fun with (in
another way)

money is essential regardless of what anyone says. you need
friendship too though. all these depressed rich celebrities
just don't have best friends, or they have a drug problem.

i have some great friends which im always thankful for, but
money is destroying my families life.

Gwely and Ezkerraldean have hit the nail on the head. Money,
mates, stable relationship, security, freedom, enough work
to occupy you, free time.

my parents have bought DK books about wellbeing and
happiness, theyre stinking rich but they still arent happy.
its because they have no friends.
money does make you happy, but not on its own

Heh. Think about this, whenever there is an argument,
regarding just about anything, try to find the root cause, I
gurantee that 90% of the time its about money in one way or
another. And if the argument isn't about money, then maybe
the argument errupted because of the irritability of not
having enough money to make ends.

My philosophy professor once told me there was a study done,
that showed after $30,000 annual income, additional money
doesnt improve one's happiness THAT much. Atleast it doesnt
ensure the same sort of long term happiness that going from
10 grand a year to 30 does. Millionares are supposedly jaded
with money after a while, thats what I heard anyway :P

Yeah, there's bugger all point being a millionaire if you
don't have the time to enjoy it. Likewise, I really think
some sort of "work" is necessary (I don't mean a job
neccessarily; perhaps just some ongoing project to work on),
in order to give you a purpose and make you appreciate free
time. I've got plenty of friends who are bums and don't do
anything with or appreciate the time off. When I have time
off I really enjoy it, it's almost an event.

Yep. It often goes back to money. Even if it's things like
people are too busy and not seeing each other enough that's
straining their relationship, if they had more money, they
could work less and see each other more, or pay for a maid
and gardener so that they can spend time they're not in work
together doing something they enjoy, rather than doing
household chores.

Dolleater: Yes, my gf keeps quoting something like that at
me, but says something much less, I think it's around £14K
she says. I know that £50 extra I earn makes me noticeably
happier. It translates to other things that make me happy: a
couple of videogames; something else for my bike; a few more
dvds; a few more albums; a nice dinner in a restaurant; a
couple of bbqs with mates; a night on the lash; a trip to
see a mate who lives miles away; etc.

I'm the first to agree money for money's sake is useless,
but I honestly reckon up to about £100K a year, I'd be
happier and happier. Although of course, the law of
diminishing returns applies; the last 10K would make less
difference than the first 10K after 14K.

so as soon as i start making more than most people i know,
i'll become happy? ridiculous. it doesn't work like that
in math terms. everyone is different - some people are
happier with more money and some with less.

money does not dictate happiness. that is totally absurd on
so many levels.

I don't think that the 30k figure has anything to do with
making more than people you know. 30k a year isn't an
absurdly large amount, in fact it's at least 15k lower than
the median income in every state in this country (20k lower
in most states, and 30k lower in a few!).

30k/year would allow you to think about other things besides
where your next meal is coming from, your rent, your phone
bill, how you're going to get to work (you can drive a more
reliable car and fix it if it breaks down) and how you're
going to pay to go to the dentist or something, etc...

Sure, money isn't everything but that's easy for people to
say who live in households where there is 30k and up coming
in. All in all, if you don't make enough money to feel safe
and secure on a day to day basis, you are going to be pretty
stressed out!

You sound like my aunt. You're probably both right though.

Money is big part ofit. I could use some money right now, I

your debts only affect your happiness if you choose it to be
so.

so you have debts. why should you let it affect your
happiness? the debt may not be a choice, but your reaction
to that debt is. only you can decide what you feel. if you
decide that you will only be happy when you are debt free,
then you will be unhappy. it's up to you.
