today i attempted to install xp pro corp edition on my
laptop and for some amazingly wierd reaosn it has decided
the product key is invalid. however said same key isn't
invalid and works perfectly well. I even tried it on my
desktop and the cd key entered fine.

why would my laptop refuse it but only my laptop?

if your current version came with your desktop computer it
can be locked to it so that you can't use it elsewhere...
Dell has a habit of doing shit like that.

it didn't come with my desktop and isn't locked to it.

it justs eems so odd that the same disc and serial willw ork
in one and not the other. when it didn't work in the laptop
i tried the same disc in the desktop out of interest and
instead of the product key is invalid it actuallyw orked so
i cancelled and exited set up.

i don't see how it can be oem. This is microsft xp
profeesional corporate edition. its designed to go on
multiple computers with one serial.

it's probably some microsoft bullshit like there's a
difference between the cd-key you'd need for a laptop and
the one for the desktop, but I don't know...

the only thing it might be that i can think of is this media
centre having some built in shite that refuses to let you
use it like a real computer!

Dells are notorious for this though. i was lucky enough to
have a "Dell XP Pro" cd, so i was ok.

vets any potential install for dell's approval.

have you tried formating the disk and installin' from zero
ground?
maybe that gets rid of Dell's bullshit?

its probably hidden partitions. they have one for dell
diagnostic utility and another one with disk image of clear
windows xp installation backup.

Mr. Taffy -> theres a great version of the Corporate XP at
oink. It cuts down a hell of a lot of useless rubbish and
thus moves like the clappers.
