Alesis Ion???

So, I know a couple people here are users of the alesis
ion. I am just wondering, how do you find it as a master
controller? How do the keys feel, and how simple is it to
alter the global functions? Do the factory midi settings
return after you turn it off, or will it keep whatever you
program it to. I am curious. I want to get one, but part of
its use will be as a master keyboard, not just as another
synthesizer. I really like the interface, but the deciding
factor will be the keyboard.

I am also wondering if those modwheels are assignable to
other equipment even when local is on.

Well, I've never tried any of the MIDI facilities of the Ion
really, but I know from flicking thru menus that there are
lots of MIDI controls.
I think you can save MIDI settings, but again, I'm not
sure.

If you want me to have a look thru/scan parts of the manual,
I will, but at the moment, I can't see what you're looking
for in there.

This is a good place to ask questions

Thanks... Its ok. I probly should just read the manual
myself. Just wanted input from people who have used one. Its
known for being a bit buggy... I don't want it to be so
buggy it makes me not work on music.

isn't this a film with Charlize Theron?

Yes, it's buggy, but it's great fun to work with. The only
little bug that's really annoyed me (but I'm working with
the first OS so you'll be different) is the arpeggiator not
working sometimes.

How are you sequencing your ion?

Well, not via my PC, I don't use that kinda sequencing.

If I use a hardware sequencer, it's usually the MC09. 303
Fatness All The Way.

Some stuff on the Ion that's hard to find demos for:

Circuit bent glitch shit

Drum demo 1

Drum demo 2

More proof that you should get one

No offense, but if you think that is good, you need to get
an evolver!
I was quite tempted to get one an ion a while back, mainly
due to the decent price I'd seen, but it has some fatal
flaws so I'll give it a miss.
I seriously think you should check out the evolver. If I
ever come into some money, the poly evolver is the first
thing I would get.

I tried an Evolver, and it was very nice, apart from one
huge problem.

Whatever I did, I could hear the sound of a CPU glitching. I
turned everything off (no notes playing, no arpeggiator,
nothing) and it was still there. I haven't a clue why this
happened (most/half of it is analog surely) but it really
put me off. Besides, I don't have any space for another
keyboard.

how weird. shouldn't do that.
I doubt that most of it is analogue. I think the only
analogue parts are the 2x analogue VCOs and the LPF. I think
just about everything else is DSP. Makes sense, digital is
cheaper to design, test, make, etc.

Yeah, I know that digital is cheaper and in mass production
easier to work with but I thought most of it was analogue. I
guess VCOs and VCFs are the most important things to me so I
just recognise that as being half a synth haha.

Yeah, I really don't know what was doing it at all. It would
be like if you played one note with a really simple patch
(like sine wave, no filtering, no fancy envelopes, no arp)
it would click all over the place.

How easy is it to make tone generator? Just an on/off
button, a frequency and a volume knob and a line out?

When you say tone generator, what do you want? It's piss
easy to make a square wave oscillator, just google "555
oscillator"

That is very easy to make. What do you want?
A tone is strictly speaking a sine wave. Presumably you want
to cover the audio range 20Hz-20kHz and have a line level
output?
Do you want it battery powered or mains powered? Or do you
want it to be powered by one of those wall socket DC
converter blocks?

Do you want sinewave output, saw, ramp, square, triangle, or
what?
As Number johnny 5 would say..."input".
