I'm just wondering if anyone knows how Aphex does such crazy beats? What software does he edit with? Does he use loops?

i think he uses Recycle, a program from the Steinberg company. that's probably not the only program he uses for that sort of thing tho.

he probably ties a pig to the middle of the room, beats it with reeds and then imitates the sounds it makes

It's not really that hard to edit the waveforms in the software to get the hits so rapid; my friend does it for some of his music. Aphex certainly knows what he's doing though.

Practice and interest in what he's doing, he's spent his life doing that since that's all he cares about. "my only ambitions in life were to never get a job and make music till I drop" He's my hero. He's one of those people where it's almost convincing to think he's really an alien.

Yeah, he def uses Recycle to cut up samples - he's mentioned it a few times in interviews...
But when it comes to sequencing?..I dunno...Protools has been mentioned a few times, which wouldn't suprise me as it's an excellent bit of software and pretty much the one most pros use for Digital Audio stuff...
A lot of his techniques are similar to the ones you'd use for Drum N Bass..i.e. cutting up breaks in Recycle and then resequencing etc...
Check out spinwarp.com for some DnB production tips...
