Machinedrums are supposed to be great. Its the one drum machine that can't seem to get bad press.
I would like to get one, but I am already neck high in debt, and the nord pushed me well over the brink. If you ever get enough money together to buy one, then do it. It will take a bit, but I doubt you will regret it.
One of the things I like about the machinedrum, is it doesn't make any bones about being digital. Their is so much analogue modelling running around right now, that its refreshing to see companies that make something digital for the sake of digital. Kind of like back in the eighties when digital synths were a new idea, and everyone was excited about them.

its amazing just how much you can do with the machinedrum. you can do so much with the built in sequencer that it'd be a crime to just trigger the individual sounds via MIDI.
i love my machinedrum for it's abilities. but i still love my 909 more ;)

how'd one go about trigger stuff on it with midi, could you do it by plugging it into a computer and using a soft-sequencer?

with the machinedrum you can do one of two things with an external MIDI sequencer (hardware or software): 1. trigger each one of the 16 drum sounds via MIDI (so for example, Bass Drum is C2, Snare Drum is C#2, etc etc etc)
2. trigger each pattern you have stored on the machine drum (pattern A1 is C4, pattern A2 is C#4 etc etc etc)
if you download the user manual for the machinedrum you'll see what i mean :) but i think it's quite cool that you can change patterns via MIDI...i'm not too sure, but i don't think i can do that with my 909

if you can get one i'd highly recommend it. also if you can, try and get the SPS-1UW version, which adds sampling to it.
i've not used one myself, but i know that it would be awesome. also i've read a lot of good reviews for the User Wave version on vintagesynth forums. kinda wish i had enough money to get mine upgraded with a User Wave function

no, you sample whatever you want and i beleive that the samples are stored in a EEPROM (Electrincally Erasable/Programmable Read Only Memory)...or it's a battery backed up memory, which means that you can sample your friend's 808 and keep the samples on your machinedrum as long as you like
thats why it's called User Wave - because you, the user can store your own waveforms to be processed by the machinedrum :)

well once sample into the machinedrum, your samples are treated as one of the built in sounds, which means you can do all the lovely sequencer trickery on your samples that you can do with the built in sounds (although i shouldn't really call them "built in sounds" since it's pure synthesis really, but you know)
is it worth it? well that all depends. are you a hardware guy or a software guy? admittedly you can do a lot of the things that the machinedrum can do with software. but i'm a hardware guy, and i personally think it'd be worth it to have that much flexibility all contained in a relatively small box of tricks. and with more reliability than a Mac or Windows based sequencer system IMO.
my advice - look, listen, touch, think. only you know what will be right for your kind of music. we can only help give you information to assist your choice

I didn't know about that midi triggering patterns with the internal sequencer. That totally switches the game up. Thats hot.

Just out of interest, can you use the machine drum as a truly versatile drum machine (IE do anything that begins to approach realistic) most of the stuff I've heard done with it, whilst impressive in it's field, is all a bit alike. It seems to be techno/idm/chiptune, rather than anything like hip hop/dnb/breakbeat. What are the offtime/shuffle/groove options like with the internal sequencer?
Before anyone cites it as proof of the "versatility" of it, Yes
I know you can do "melodies" on it by playing the same sound with pitch changes, but I don't really see that as massively impressive, even my ER-1 does that and you can do it by hand/live on a lot of older drum machines. :)
Personally, for the money, I think I'd go for the desktop version of the monomachine. I am glad someone is still making this sort of kit though.

THE MACHINEDRUM IS THE BESTEST FUCKING PIECE OF EQUIPMENT FOR MAKING MY BEATS, NOTHING COMPARES. THEY ALL SUCK COMPARED TO THIS BEAST OF A MACHINE. THE ONLY THING THAT COMES CLOSE TO MAKING BEATS LIKE THIS IS MY COMPUTER. BUT MY COMPUTER DOES OTHER THINGS.
