ok, now i'm getting a decenent audio setup finally i'm
going to rave to rip all my cd's, again :(

What do you think would be best, 256 AAC VBR or 320 AAC?
I've got a 60GB ipod so space shouldn't be a problem, for
now :)

think i'm going to go with 320 AAC, might rip lossless for
storage at some point. Damn i hate having to rip all my cd's
again.

use EAC with LAME encoder. you are guarenteed perfect rips.
if you want me to link them i will, or else you can use
google.

If you really want to do a proper job, buy a couple of
external hard drives, rip everything to lossless and archive
on the drives. Then you can transcode from those to whatever
format is the most in vogue at any time without ripping
again. Just plug in the drives and rip more when you get new
CDs.

hi flachead! :P

anyway within 3-4 years audio compression will be obsolete
anyway due to the peverse increase in the size of data
storage with regards spondulics

Did I say flac? I merely said lossless 0:)

I use CDex, it's better than EAC imo becuz EAC it's faster
and easier to use. Never had problems. I can't really tell
the difference between 192kbs mp3s and CDs anyway...

it's better because it's faster? you n00b

I'll second using EAC & LAME.

rip lossless to DVDR (cheapest)

picking the lossy codec/bitrate depends on the type of
music.

I tested so far:
- musepack at high bitrate is the best for noisy music
- Ogg Vorbis is an excellent allround codec at most
bitrates
- AAC (LC) and MP3 are about equal, use very high bitrate
- AAC (HE)(PS) is best for very low bitrates (+/-48 kbs),
great for muxing with highly compressed video, not for hifi
music

What's the point in ripping CDs to lossless files in order
to burn them on DVD-R ?

why doesn't recordlabels release stuff on dvd with like 32
bit and 192,000khz?

instead of shitty 16 bit 44,000 khz?

because only ten people would hear the difference?

you mean only 10 people would buy it

for backup

buy 100 DVDR spindle for 40 euro and put around 1300 albums
lossless on it. So just a few of those can probably hold
most people's music collection. After a few years I'd
tranfer them on whatever new media format before they rot
away and keep the old ones for extra backup.

HD is a lot more expensive and they can have virusses or
crashes

because then people would complain that they want 64
bit/384.000 khz and not shitty 32 bit/192,000khz :)

ended up encoding everything in apple lossless and putting
them on an external hard drive, transcoded everything to
320kbps aac for use on the comp/ipod. cheers,
