Let's say i want to make beats, hip-hop-trip-hop, jungle
style, whatever... What device should i buy?

A sampler? A drum computer? Where do all these people get
their samples? Live instruments? I want to find out!

use your mouth to beatbox on the street corners until some
brotha comes along to spit rhymes for dimes...

...failing that, use an upturned biscuit tin

Maybe any serious replies?

get reason or fruity loops if youre jsut starting out, they
come with their own samples and you can import your own.

that was deadly serious, don't be so disrespectful - you got
somethin against human beatboxing? it's an art-form

You're right, that's why i need heavy equipment... I do not
possess the talent to lure brothas to spit their rhymes...

Besides, i said hip-hop like beats, not hip-hop in general
:)

hell, just download a hiphop orientated soundfont - and then
get cooleditproV1.2A and cut/paste your way in hiphop heaven
:)

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2002-03-05 21:31 [#00113140]

...oops, i don't have a keyboard and if you do, you won't
need cooledit -=- just a MIDI processor - cakewalk, cubase,
somethin compatible with soundfonts or somethin... this is
where someone else takes over...

alright then... I already have reason... but i don't like
the samples it comes with, it has no power whatsoever
(talking loudness, strength of the beats) I think the beats
come out wimpy...

(and i'm sure it's not my programming)

you can make pretty wicked beats in reason, you know how to
use a compressor right? layer like 3-4 ReCrums on top of
eachother each with different bass drums/snares etc and
compress it all and mess around with distortion adn filters.

is reason the one with just heaps of racks?

dude, you need samples of REAL drums - or, i have this magic
soundfont and the kick is HARD as nails

I know... Real drums are the best for making breakbeats...
they sound a lot better... ( Thinking of Roni Size (
breakbeat era) type drums )

Or Red Snapper type drums.. These are cool!

you could buy a cheap drum machine and some effects. you
could buy a sampler and sample other beats and rearrange
them.

That i thought... But what brand of equipment? I heard AKAI
makes good drum computers, but i have absolutely no
knowledge of it...

do a search for "soundfonts" there are a few places that are
good - one is like "hammer.net" or something... anyways,
download heaps! i have a kick-ass jazz drumset i will
twiddling with :) and lots of ethnic sounds and synths and
shit - since i have no keyboard i live for that crap - i use
a programme called Unity DS-1, which has a little pianoboard
you can use with the computer-keyboard to record to a wave
file, and then use cooledit pro - that's how i work anyways
- painstaking but (mostly) worth it (you can get a cracked
version of Unity DS-1 somewhere)

buy a drum-machine, you won't regret it
(+distortion/compression)
a friend of mine got a tr-626 few months ago, yesterday he
got a boss metalzone distortion pedal, and it's fucking lot
of fun to mess with these ... !!!

go to sonicstate.com

a good, cheap drum machine is an alesis hr-16 or hr-16b.
akai makes good samplers.

Does it have a large sampleset? Does the machine allow
sampling? 'Cause i will need versatility in the machine, a
lot of versatility...

And how difficult is it to create squarepusher like beats?
With the repetitions, and twisted fx?

it's a pain in the ass to program when you tried one of x0x
thesounds are not very good but for oldschool it's
perfect...
we are going to get the 727 quickly

no sample function
but you have one output for each sounds (nearly) and thats
great
have you tried Native Instruments Battery, it's a
sampler/drumachine
i heard it's real good

727 is more africa oriented sounds
626 is more classics, but more sounds than on a 808/909,
with chinese cymbal, cup, and other exotic sounds

the 727 is the latin percussion based 707. the 626 is just a
little older.

battery is a software drum sampler, you need a VST host like
cubase or logic to use it. You can layer any sounds you
like/pitch them however you want, with independant amp and
pitch envelopes for every drum pad (54 of them) there are
also different outs for every pad which rocks. I use it for
all my beats. Its great for chopping hits off vinyl and then
loading them all into battery.

Uh, well my own stuff... you can hear it here if you like,
all the beats are made with battery.

www.ampcast.com/aardvarkinterface

Im not trying to spam you, this is jsut the only example I
know of. Anyways if you dont like the songs hopefully it
will at least give you an idea.

of my pc

Get a SoundBlaster Live! for cheap and make your own
soundfonts from beats you've sampled onto your pc. Sequence
them in something like cakewalk and you are sorted. I know a
semi-pro who makes breakbeat on his live! still, they are so
underated. You've got a wicked sampler with as much memory
as you've got in your pc.
