We are pleased to introduce our newest non-IDM signing, Grizzly Bear.
A four piece based in Brooklyn New York, it was the amazing non-IDM musical growth displayed by the band in their two years together which caught our eye. From the original incarnation as a one man non-IDM band of acoustic guitar, field tapes and drum machine; to it’s current state complete with drums, two guitars, bass, woodwinds and effects petals, all cradled by four part non-IDM harmonies, Grizzly Bear’s music has made the leap from charming lo-fi folk rock to non-IDM breathtaking, experimental cinematic pop.
Gentlemen start your whining

They've already got Lex for hip hop and Arcola for Dance. Can't Warp make another sub-label for all the trendies, rather than diluting the IDMness of the main label?

it just annoys me whtn they sign "normal" bands. if they put them on a sublabel it would be ok - the main warp thingy should be just for IDM (like ceri says)

"complete with drums, two guitars, bass, woodwinds and effects petals,
all cradled by four part non-IDM harmonies," = normal
normal music = two guitars, a drum kit and a singer. this is the same shit

yes, special music can only be made when in possession of two cranky old synths, an old drumcomputer and some bearded git who can then try to be "enigmatic" when talking to journalists.

Exactly, if I wear my Warp t-shirt out, I don't want some Johnny-come-lately Maximo Park/Grizzly Bear fans thinking they're my new best friends and asking me to visit their myspace website because they mistakenly believe I'm "into the same music as us".
That picture is dreadful. The man on the left looks like Leonardo Di Caprio which in itself is enough reason to harbour an irrational dislike for them, even before hearing their music.

Youd think warp would like to keep their label fans, stuff like this alienates us as the kind of people who buy their t-shirts. If im not mistaken I think the majority of the stuff they sell in warpmart is very electronic, which seems odd somehow.

Well, I hate to say it, but... a) Warp can sign who they want b) They are a business and probably have realised that they can make more money on "non-IDM"
c) Getting bands like this will be another entry point for people to experience "IDM", so they might enjoy it and get into it, surely not a bad thing, unless you want to be uber-1337 underground fans (this is not true, my small HMV has afx, ae, etc therefore not underground)
d)Warp has been going downhill for quite a while, I wouldn't wear a warp t-shirt anyway because loads of nathan barley-esque types have been wearing them for years. Opt for a collapse of the wave function logo or a rephlex logo or something a bit less likely to appear on a funky channel four show as a prop.
I went onto their myspace and the one song I listened to was a bit poo though, hardly experimental, infact I would go so far as to say I didn't like it. But hey, there is always Trans Canada thing to look forward to....

It's strange to imagine but it is still possible to make music the old way. When Warp was putting out bleep-style and then the AI stuff and then Autechre found their footing and the whole Aphex phenomenon and etc, it was pretty much all great... the odd dodgy release, but on the whole excellent. Now there's a distinct branching out into different genres I'm still looking for brilliance. True, there seems to be more I don't like now, but as long as the "non Warp style" stuff is as good, I don't care what kind it is.
There's been a few signings I'm not keen on... !!! and Maximo Park for instance, but there's also been Gravenhurst and Chris Clark who I really like.
Grizzly Bear, though a really really crap name, might be great. I'll reserve judgement until I hear 'em.
