Anyone speak Japanese 日本?

The move date fast approaches and i still feel like I am
making little progress language-wise. I have just started to
learn to read and write in Japanese, it's surprisingly easy
to read because it sticks in your head with the pictoral
reference. Mind you, i only know about 60 Kanji and there
are 1942 you need to know to read a newspaper so I am a long
way off.

I was just wondering if anyone here spoke Japanese and could
offer some learning tips and advice. I don't wnat to move
there completly ignorant of the language like alot of
people, who do what i am going to do, seem to do.

I'm writing a paper on Aristotle right now.. it's starting
to go a bit silly, though...

what aspect of aristotle, i havent decided which question
do. I have a choice of the following:

1. Aristotle's metaphysics is a clear improvement on Plato's
metaphysics. Discuss.

2. What is Aristotle's distinction between primary and
non-primary being? How important is this distinction for
Aristotle's conception of metaphysics? Is it a good
distinction?

3. What candidates might there be for the role of primary
being? Which does Aristotle choose and why? Is his
position a good one?

4. What is eudaimonia and why should we aim for it?

5. Outline and critically evaluate Aristotle's doctrine of
the mean.

6. Do human beings have a function? Outline and critically
assess Aristotle's argument for a positive answer to this
question.

I am going to teach English. I am really going to learn
Japanese properly, but the best way to get there is to get a
job for one of the evil corporations tecahing English. That
way you get an apartment, visa, and income, all sorted
before you even Land.

Alot of people go out there and don't really learn Japnese
or Kanji etc. Supoosedly thats why most Gaijin (foriegners)
are considered ignorant and rude. Hopefully i will be good
enough to at least ask people to help with my Japanese.

That sounds cool! I wish I could do something like that.
Best of luck to you.

haha everyone says that. It's real easy. You just need a
degree (to get the VISA) and well that's about all you need.
Getting a job with the big corporations is as easy as simply
making teh effort to show up for the 3 day interview and
doing exactly as they say (not thinking for yourself is the
key to passing the interview).

I'm doing ethics vs happiness and problems/advantages of
using his ethics today... #4, #5 and #6 of yours are partly
in my paper... they're all good fun, though.

with the ethics, though, you have to discuss the metaphysics
to clarify shit.. with the metaphysics you don't need to
mention the ethics... but yeah ethics is more fun.

it would be useful when i do finally find out wher ein Japan

customs, prices, resturaunt phone numbers. Pretty impressive
:D

I'm afraid I can't respond with a straight face as long as
you have those freaky kids in your avatar.

I took a one year not-so-intensive course, which left me
with a thorough grasp of hiragana, a shallow grasp of
katakana, and a meager grasp on kanji.

At least I'm now in a position to learn as I go; getting
started is the toughest part.

As far as Aristototle's concerned, just do something
outrageous... The way those questions are put is usually an
invitation to either a) write yet another bland "here's what
I've read", or b) alternately to write a dazzlingly unique
"here's what I think". Lest you try, they won't know how
good you are.

"getting started is the toughest part."

> i guess it depends on the person, the matter etc, but
that's so wrong for me. : |

ive watched alot of the previews of the George and Kieko
show, it looks great. skype lessons etc. all seems cool. Not
sure i can afford it mind you, cheap as it is i ahve to save
for my flight and first months rent for when i get there
that and i need to buy a new laptop and pay off as much of
my 1500 overdraft as possible.

Getting started for me is ok too, when i first began i spent
a week doing about 5 hours study a day, now im lucky if i
can manage 30 mins without giving up.

Well...

I mean to say that once you know how to read -kana and how
to use a dictionary, and to understand what "wa" and "ga"
and so on mean, you can take any text or video or audio and
learn something, with the help of a dictionary or whatever.
I recommend buying a proper two-way Japanese dictionary,
with both kanji and kana inscription. Also, as brokenphones
mentioned, there's PLENTY of online material out there. Can
you say Google?

Still, the best motivation is to actually view/read/listen
to some interesting material, whatever that might be.

well, you do have a point, that sounds perfectly
reasonable... but i'm in third year of japanese university
and i'm calling it quits. honestly, it must be due in great
part to the horribly academic, disconnected from reality and
demotivating way they teach it here, and i'm to blame for
not having learnt by myself, but i've pretty much lost my
interest for it for the moment. to the point that i'm almost
feeling irritated whenever i hear something in japanese.

so...
good luck.

is that studying Japanese or studying something else at a
Japanese university? all study gets like that, you reach the
dead zone where everything to do with teh subject not only
bores you to tears it actually infuriates. I had same with
Philosophy it normally seems to happen before a
breakthrough. I always think of it as a patience test but i
am the eternal annoying optomist.

it's the worst feeling especially when it happens after you
have invested so much time into getting as far as you can. I
think the key is in getting so pissed off to the point where
you refuse to have all that effort be a waste heh.
