BoC:- New Age Hippies

that geogaddi has got some crap on it. what have they been
up to? A trip to India? lapping up the musical influences?
pah Im sorry, but geogaddi misses the mark so badly in my
opinion. I was expecting something lush, deep and beautiful
like music has the right to children. Instead weve got an
album that sound like second rate BoC. Global Goons new
album on the other hand, is fucking awesome. cosmic
melodies, a natural roughness mixed with a heavenly
sweetness, and its rock solid, every track is a winner. I
find it bizarre how everyone seems transfixed by BoCs very
weak effort, and yet no one mentions vatican nitez? Bah,
going back to crudulus on cat118, bye

Uh well.... I disagree with your Hippie Comment there.....
and with your opinion. But thats what it is, an opinion so
your entitled to it. I feel the other way around, while its
probably not my favourite BOC album... I like it so damn
much.

Yo Que. Get your facts straight.

BOC are as ANTI New Age Hippie as you can be...READ the new
interview in the latest NME issue.

They dont wanna be called hippies and they are NOT
religious. They do like math tho and Hexagons ofcourse ;)

I'm just listening to my newly purchased Boc geogaddi pirate
disc. And it sounds rather nice, but since I'm in my office
I probably don't have enough time to concentrate on it.
Perhaps it is second rate, by numbers stuff... Perhaps not,
I have to have a closer, more intimate listen. Their music
is deceptively simple and has always been. Each time I
actually pay attention, something interesting happens. But I
have yet to see if it adds up to the same fantastic result
as Music has the... Can we discuss this tomorrow?

aiight ;)

Tomorrow you will love it for sure.

Yeah, I'm at alpha and omega now and it does to have some
eastern influences. But it blends well with the rest. Cool
ending with rain too. I'm not disappointed so far, but we
best wait til tomorrow.

que, i might have shown your message a bit more respect had
you not already posted the same message perfectly verbatim
on the joyrex board about 3 weeks ago.
chill out. it's not a competition, and even if it was, how
would you go about declaring a winner between a shot-putter
and a sprinter? or a chef and a novelist?
get my point?

I don't like the phrase New Age or Hippie.
It's always a new age unless you live in the past.
Hippies would not be prepared to work hard enough to record
an album.
And i think it's a great album which rewards repeated
listening.

i ve given geogaddi plenty of listens, and i must say there
are 2 tracks on there that are really nice: track 14 and
track 10 (apart from the stuff about 1969 at the end). The
rest, i cant get into, because it sounds like one of my
grannies new age relaxation tapes. listened to vatican nitez
again and i have to say its wonderful, wicked tracks ALL the
way through, and my age? 30

I think vatican nitez is better than geogaddi.

And its funny, because I spent $26 on geogaddi and I simply
downloaded vatican nitez, so I think ur dead on about people
supporting stars simply for their stardom, I'm definately
guilty of it.

offline que from vancouver (Canada) on 2002-03-05 16:07 [#00112744]

bizarre, i downloaded vatican nitez too, and bought BoC!

I think people pay for music from artists they like to
support them. Ive never paid for an AFX CD and I dont think
i ever would cause I could care less about supporting him. I
dont know what you're basing your "star support" claim on.

keep the artists in their place, download/dont buy :)

no, i wouldnt buy global goons stuff, ill always download it
cos hes already rich enough

Taoist, that is ideal.

Recent CD's I've purchased: Drukqs, Geogaddi etc. (huge
artists)

Downloaded: Cex, Global Goon, Bochum Welt...smaller names.

The point is, I should be buying the albums of the small
artists, but I do just the opposite. I know that alot of
people act in the same way that I do...that's what I base my
claim on.

i try to base it on their income, i'll never buy
aphex/boc/autechre/squarepusher in the future just download.
but will spend money on venetians sanre etc

Did it ever occur to you that they wouldn't release music if
they could not make a profit off it?

These "stars" as you call them are not fabulously
wealthy...and they don't have "real" jobs to pay the bills.

Would you bother doing something if it was your livelyhood
but couldn't make a profit off it to support yourself?

Downloading is fine for previewing, since nobody should be
made to keep a record they don't like, but if you like it,
buy it - it's the least you can do to support their art and
keep them making more music you like.

well said, joyrex.

to quote 'que': "i try to base it on their income"... LOL,
since when did you know what their income is?

if people like you had anything approaching a realistic idea
of what these artists actually earn, you'd soon change your
attitude. they are not millionaires by any stretch of the
imagination.

and warp, far from being a huge cynical corporation, are in
fact a small tight-knit little company who put a lot of love
into the music.

so try doing some research before you start mouthing off on
these forums.

offline Archrival on 2002-03-05 21:10 [#00113105]
Points: 4265 Status: Lurker

Yeah I made a topic about this earlier, the warp artists
aint that rich, I mean none of them sold gold or platinum
and I know a lot of broke gold artists.

I dont think Richard is worth 5000 dollars for a one hour DJ
set tho, but keep it real and buy good artists records, they
need it.

How much has MHTRTC sold?

gold album = 500 000 units.

I dont think BOC has sold over 100 000?? correct me if im
wrong.

offline Taoist Blockade from Wales on 2002-03-05 21:24 [#00113130]

I would be suprised if MHTRTC sold over 50,000, that would
be a huge run for this type of release. Hopefully someone
has more concrete facts about this, Ive often wondered how
many copies of these albums are sold. I think I remember
reading somewhere though that Autechre sells around 20,000
of their albums and surely they have more fans than Boc. (at
least in the past they have)

Im not totally positive about any of this though so no one
rip my head off if im wrong.

I can't beleive it!! LOL
rich is rich i think...

I beleave in supporting artists. Sure I download Mp3s, but
make sure to buy the cd if I injoy it. However I dont
beleave it is stealing if you have downloaded an album that
you would never buy, like the Chemical Brothers new album...
I would never buy it and rarly listen to it, so whats the
harm in having the mp3s? But as far as music i listen to
such as Aphex Twin. I buy every album i can get my hands on.
Why?? because i injoy it... i dont care if RDJ is getting
filthy rich. He makes excilent music and i think he
deservses my money.

i think they were just expressing their drug filled trips.
listen for all the bong hits in the back ground.
i've heard em numerous times.

I would never buy an album based on the income of the
artist. The albums I like the most I spend money on so that
I can have legit copies with the highest quality sound. The
albums I want but can't affors, I download. Simple as that.
Vatican Nitez is real nice, but aopinion about Geogaddi is
just that, opinion. I really don't understand the
difficulty folks have distinguishing their opinions from
facts. And of all topics... music! How subjective is
music?
