Im in the process of starting a new noise/ambient band. Im looking for a good synth $500 or under, hopefully lots of options etc. Im big on wanting some like dark orchestral shit if you know any synths that incorporate this as well. Im pretty much open to whatever as long as its in that price range, although id prefer to stay away from retro equipment but most of the time it ends up being that that gets alot of the better sounds. help me out.

hey get a korg microsynth. they're sweet as far as contols go, you just have to steer well clear of all the presets. ie run it through a giutar distortion pedel or something.

Roland SH32. Goes for about $200 used. It can do the dark symphonic sounds, as well as emulate many classic synths like the SH101 and tb303, and you can do the arpish sectral autechre sounds too.
And if you want noise, throw some sample and hold LFO onto the decent resonant filter, and change the rate, run it through a cheap compressor, and you can destroy speakers.

Seriously. SH32. It was totally overlooked, probly due to the low price and crappy design. Its one of my favorite VA. 100x better than a microkorg.

Or for $500 you could get an evolver, which does everything those old classic mono synths do, only reliably, and kills everything out there.
evolver > all those classic polys and monos

I bought mine off of Jimmy Edgar on ebay. Or at least someone claiming to be Jimmy Edgar. He used the name Jimmy Edgar on the packing slip, so it seems to be probly true.

Yeah. I don't trust korg synths, but after hearing some samples of what it can do over the past couple days, I am getting curious.

I've used alot of Korg synths. from what I've found they sound amazing but they are always over complicated in some way. As long as you can profficiently toggle your way through displays they are lovely. I, sadly, have wanted a Roland JP 8080 since i was 11 (I'm 22 heh). I love em and I've never managed to buy one cheap enough.

I hear that about the JP 8080. However, I can't stand the sound of korg synthesizers. Something plasticky about them, it kind of reminds me of the cheap synthedit vst sound only in hardware form.

I have a JP-8000, and I've always loved it. It's a good little synth-rock unit in a way (even though it's primarily geared for dance I think), because you can get some Cars-y sounding leads out of it and some other nice textures. The JP-8080 is even nicer form what I hear, and my experience with the JP-8000 is enough to make me consider buying the SH-32 without even hearing it.

well i want something kinda new, versatile as well. able to all genere's almost but mainly use it for the noise/ambient stuff im looking for as well. i went to guitar center today and messed around with the Micron and the MicroKorg and although i know a Micron is better the Korg just seems to have a dirtier sound, i dunno unless i could modify it. Have to get used to it since its basically 3 knobs. That SH-32 looks pretty neat, i have a midi controller i use w/ that as well. Im really looking for all the info i can get before i buy, ill be buying this next month or end of this month as its a birthday present for myself.

There are some SH-32 samples here. They really are very affordable compared to most gear - I just might get one myself.
I am definitely buying a DSI Evolver once I have some money. Those things just seem so yummy I could eat them.

since when does monosynth equal orchestral ? And why buy digital hardware synths? Just flush your money down the toilet. Maybe absynth would be better for you? Or maybe I'm don't understand what you want from your synth.

If you want the MS2000, just get the microKorg, it's the same DSP engine, same presets, just a few features (instead of 16step arp, it's 8step; big keyboard) missing.

ok here's exactly what i want and you guys tell me whatd be best:
1.Its for a ambient/noise band along the lines of GYBE or Sigur Ros, if youve heard of them.
2.Id be circuit bending along with the synth so if theirs something to compliment that at all thatd be nice.
3.Id like a dirtier sound overall, but not totally just trash distortion, id like it to be semi-clean but SOUND dirty, if that makes any sence?
4.I also make "hardcore" music so if the synth could incorporate semi good drum beats in it as well and be programmable.
5.Fairly easy to program, this would be my first synth but i do have a high learning curve so if it is a bit harder its not really a BIG deal
anyways thats basically what im looking for, the orchestral sounds cant really be done well from what ive seen in cheaper synth's i found really kick ass noises out of like the Triton and shit but i havent come across anything that can do shit along the lines of that and stay under my price ($500)
so if you have any ideas/suggestions feel free to help. thanks.

Sorry, actually. You should get one. Maybe you want a sampler. A yamaha a4000 has a great sound and tons of effects. You can sample gritty stuff and make them pretty and clean with the sampler. The Yamaha is probably under 300. I can't think of a synth under 500 that would do all that. Ohm wait, maybe a roland d-50 with programmer. Or some other synth like it.

my advice is to find a synth that has nice sounds, real-time control and programmability. If it has those 3 things, but doesn't sound as dirty as you'd like, you could always buy a nice Tube overdrive pedal to run it through. That would add plenty of warm grit to the sound.

@Zephyr
i would do that only the places around here have a limited selection of synths. and to look at them online it only gives basic demos of what they think is cool, the synth could be perfect for what i need for all i know but if they dont sample the mp3 on there and if i cant test it then im fucked.

check these. The d-50 is for you. I feel it. Get the programmer though. The PG-1000. Should make it all around 500. Don't get fooled into new fangled synths. It's an industry. There are junk yards (ebay) full of wonderful forgotten synths.

yeah, I know exactly how you feel about wanting to try it out and hearing samples before buying. So, you just have a guitar center near you, and no other large instrument retailers? I've always had at least 2 such stores to visit and have had the priveledge of playing some very cool synths for long periods of time for free. One thing that always comes to mind when people ask for gritty/dirty (and not true analog) is the korg triton extreme. It's got its own built in tube overdrive section and can sound pretty raw. The only problem is that it's out of your price range, which is why I suggested adding on a tube overdrive pedal to a cheaper synth. :)

well i dunno, i live in DFW so their HAS to be like a store devoted to synths somewhere in the area but i dont know about it if there is. That tube pedal thing is a good idea, and as for the roland though bogala i was reading some of those reviews and some are real good and some are bad, which is to be expected. this is going to be an ongoing search till i find the perfect synth...i will find it.
