good songs from crappy gear/sounds?

anyone know of good examples of artists who make good music
using limited means, such as crappy gear, or not "pro" gear,
or a limited selection of sounds throughout the album. i
was thinking how interesting it would be to hear an album
that used all the same drum sounds and bass sounds
throughout but still for some reason was good. it would
take alot of effort to give it life.
groups like aphex and autechre seem to be the opposite of
this, every song has its own set of new sounds. not to down
that in the least its amazing, it just got me thinking of
the opposite.

Some really early Boards of Canada is on pretty shady gear
and it still sounds great, I really like that lo-fi sound. I
think its hard to classify anything as "pro gear" because
often the artists want it to sound crap.(as in the sounds) I
find theres only so much of that pristine "pro" sound one
can take.

I know a lot of groups that make bad music with really good
equipment.

i heard that some where.

I couldn't tell you if it's good, you'd have to decide for
yourself... but I definately use crappy "non pro" gear
(modplug tracker) and I've used a small selection of the
saaaaame samples. It's at www.mp3.com/artificialselection.
Also www.mp3.com/hanniz and www.mp3.com/astrix get by quite
nicely with limited sound pallettes. www.mp3.com/imaginary
too. I heard otto von schirach doesn't use top notch
equipment and matmos said they don't need great expensive
equipment to make good stuff either.

bogdan made boku mo wakaran and samurai math beats (as well
as his other albums im sure) on one piece of free
software...
i also use only two freeware softwares and a few samples to
make music...as for it being good...well..i like it..im not
sure if anyone else would...ill allow you to figure that out
for yourself:

8000 bc is my favorite (escalo frio seemed less thought
out). 8000 bc is simply wicked. Good lord. And he's a loon
too, with the crazy lyrics like "a magic piece of mushroom",
but it's all distorted in the most wickedly cartoony way.
It's one of my top 3 favorite cd's probably.

"that does not satisfy my logic circuits"

what a great ending... what a wicked album. It's pure evil.

lol... thats for sure! It was pure luck finding it. Just
pick up a random disc from the electronica section and it
ended up being a grate album! How often dose that happen! I
was worried i would end up with another coaster.

XD

where do you people shop?? I'd never find that anywhere
around here, not even autechre. You must waste loads of
money doing it that way though... You've heard of soulseek
or morpheus or whatever right? Where you can hear before you
buy? Try www.forcedexposure.com for a great selection too.

ive seen that otto von shirach album at the store around
here before..i think theres even a copy in the used bin..ill
have to check it out...
and yes forcedexposure does have a nice selection..also
check out www.safetyinnumbers.com and www.skimo.com

I live poshnu, tuvalu. Man, one in the used bin even? If you
havn't heard it get it!! It's not for everyone, but I guess
we have fairly similar tastes. It's really technical, like
almost showing off, good lord. Get that and crunch "1", get
crunch especially if you like later autechre. It's more
playful than autechre though. Thanks for the links. Musical
selection in stores sucks here in poshnu, but at least
there's online shopping!

i made some breakbeats using a stapler and Cool Edit, but it
would be wise of me to compose a song with the stapler in it
to demonstrate on the MB.
just a warning; i'm a procrastinator

DJ Premier creates classic after classic with the same drums
sounds (even same patterns) and same bass and hi only almost
uses his old Akai sampler (vinyl and tunrtable ofcourse) and
a midi keyboard to trigger the samples :)

I dont understand how I cant be bored after a decade of
Primo and he still havent made a wack beat :)

AFX early material was pretty lo fi but good and BOC too

I heard Drexciya used mostly uses analog stuff, old synths
only vintage stuff like moogs n sfuff like that. He went
digital on his latest effort me think tho.

The new BOC sounds kinda digital hi fi too. They said that
they tried to make the sound as old as possible tho.

Squarepusher used a Boss DR660 drum machine for his early
stuff. I had one, and I can tell you, they are hunks of
shit.

the opposite, depending on your opinion. uh?

roxxor'sz, thuh.

MR.OIZO Attack Of The Analogue Worms

He uses limited equipment & similar sounds in all his
songs, yet they all kick ass. Very deep with booty bass.
AWESOME.

sort of electro industrial band of a few years back. they
used very little equipment. somethinglike one synth and a
sequencer. check it!!!

i don't even have a keyboard or a proper soundcard, yet my
music is fantastic. i have been called a genius so many
times that i am immune to praise -- now i just seek solace
in cheap name-calling... please, call me horrible horrible
names so i can rough it up

squarepusher uses a few bits of very expensive gear
now-a-days, including
2 orville harmonizers.

i'm nearly positive that matmos and otto just don't want to
give away their secrets. they're both modern software
junkies.

it really doesnt matter what kind of stuff you use though.
i use fruity loops too but i use it more as a sketch pad. i
get some real rough ideas then i export all the waves and
fuck em up more with soundforge and acid. then i add some
more stuff on top off of anythin i can plug into my
mixer/computer like my turntables, my bass, my cat...

crappy gear encourages experimentation and creativity..good
gear encourages settling for first non crappy sounding
preset and hence crappy product as a whole..it also
encourages gearwhoredom

I agree with everything said about the pros of using
"crappy" equipment/software... of course it's still great...
magic... organizing stuff compared to, say, a piano which
didn't take advantage of the computer. And thanks pachi,
that song was a remix for a friend on the internet, so I
wanted to make something good, like a finished product
sorta, not just experiments like most of my stuff.

I think it's quite funny to get crazy sounds out of a
freeware tracker... being limited forced me to create my own
short cuts and techniques... I wonder what I could do with
good equipment because of this now. Of course, it would
probably be good to have good equipment right from the
start... if you wanted to limit yourself, you could... if
you could resist the temptation to take advantage of the
equipment's ability all the time, not your brain's.

from what I heard I liked lipswitch better than
aleamapper... aleamapper seemed ambient sorta. I havn't
heard either album enough though. I think I like otto von
schirach 8000 bc better though. Richard Devine has some
wicked tracks on "ischematic folks" too, a schematic
compilation.
