lovely morning all, need some help!

im using an Akai DPS12i digital portastudio to record a load
of 'found sounds' and make tunes out of them (the results
will be in this weeks BIYC update). im transferring them
from the akai to my PC from the red/white audio out to my
pcs line in and recording them in audacity but i get a small
amount of noise. is this the cable? i can use audacitys
noise removal feature but on quiet sounds i lose some of the
sound itself which is doing my nut in.

any suggestions? thanks!

what cables are they?

is the noise there if you just plug the cables in without
them being in the akai?

is the noise there if you plug them into the akai, but
without playing any sound?

is the noise there if you plug them into something besides
your pc?

heh, you're welcome

I go into "cable debug mode" twenty times a day, so I'm
getting quite good at it...

you should probably test the akai first too, though -- no
use in buying a high-quality cable if the hiss is in akai as
well...

Actually, a couple of websites I just read seemed to have
people complaining about the sound quality from the analogue
audio out of this device. If your computer can record
digital in, that is suggested.

word! if there's coax or optical on it, get that.. you can
be sure that the only noise then will be on what you've
recorded.

my computer has an awful AWFUL soundcard. might leave it a
few days and use the optical on my mates laptop... might
yield better results. ive tested the akai with a different
cable and there is still some noise but not as much! bloody
useless machines, at least i stole it from college.

I wish akai would stop doing things like making decent
machines that have one big problem like bloody awfull master
out channels. Seriously. They could have saved themselves a
lot of shit and just spent the extra $5 it would take to
make a proper line out.

i know what you mean. i chose this over a tascam tape one
for the audio quality (although i kinda want some tape hiss
now) and even though its a lot older now ive used both the
build quality of the tascam seems far superior in my
opinion.

Hmmm. Aparently, its a pretty solid, and noise free machine,
except for the noise in the line out. There is probly a way
to have the audio out modified with higher quality
components or better insulation that would kill the noise.

ive only got it for two weeks and i have to pay for it if i
break it so i wont be modifying it. maybe the reason the
build quality seems shit is because around 100 wanna be rock
stars have recorded their god awful demos on it prior to me
using it and as such it has 3 faders and a dial missing. its
got some hilarious emo tunes stored on the HD though.
samples ahoy!

See, that hiss isn't the output. Its the emo leaking through
onto your sounds.

If you want my advice, take the harddrive, put it in a
soundproof container and burn it.
