I was listening to the FF 7 music and these have the extension .psf
I'm guessing that stands for playstation sound file. can you make music with the ps1 or ps2? like you could on for example the snes?
does it have a soundengine?

Yes, you can do that in some way. I don't really know what you need for it though. About extensions, they could be also mp3s not only psf, I think you need to convert them with some program. Maybe someone more expert about all this will be able to help you.

there are certain "games" for creating music on ps2s.. there's a group here in norway who does that.. they've even released a few things I think and at concerts it's just two guys playing playstation...
they're called Tøyen, but I can't find their homepage.. try searching soulseek or something...

i thought playstation just played some sort of cd-a or mp3 audio file, and even if it did have its own sound engine, i cant imagine it being as special as the nes or something similiar, as it'd probaly be midi or some shit : P

PSF entry at wiki
I have plenty of psf soundtracks. It's something like midi, it seems, with samples and sequencing guidelines, although psf is not generally based on an "original" file, but rather itself IS the original file - namely, playstation/portable sound format.
PSF really sounds exactly the same on the playstation as it does in winamp.
It's pretty condensed, FFVII (4 CDs) fits in less than a megabyte (!). Wow.

Where can you find the files? Could you just grab them from the discs?

You can freely dwownload a program called PSound to rip music from PS1 games. And convert it to wav or ogg vorbis files. Google it or something.

If it's just a text file telling the PS how to play the songs, then one megabyte is alot. It's not recorded audio, probably some PS version of MIDI.

The sound engine is like midi but the format can integrate non synthesized audio with the music, for example in ff8 you hear some real vocal chanting. I think thats right anyways, maybe I got this information from a dream.
Also, there is a psf output plugin for winamp.

Yeah, it's hot, those big 4-disc RPG soundtracks that normally take up like 300MB of space get whittled down to a handful of MB, it's great when HD space is at a premium. Hot.
Zophar has some PSF players and soundtracks and miscelleanea. I think I use Highly Experimental.

That's right, I've got most ff soundtracks in that format, plus mp3/cd quality. One takes a few dozen megs, another a few gigs.
Paco: I'm not talking of how it works inside your PSX, I'm talking of how it works in Windows. In windows you need a tiny psf file, a tiny psf plugin or a compatible player, a game-specific sound library (.psflib - usually a few hundred kbs), plus a possible minipsf file with additional information stored (some extra kbs). It's not a "text file", although all midi-style formats obviously take advantage of the host computer's "skills".
Those FF8 vocals that osiris mentioned, for example, do add to the size of the psf soundtrack, making the four CD's of worth in FF8 12 megabytes in size. Still, that's only a fraction of the size of the mp3's...
