[cabletech] assistance!

I need to connect 1/4" mono microphone (or it's XLR
connection if i take off the cable) to a mono "line-level"
RCA socket. Can I use a female XLR to male RCA (or 1/4" jack
to male RCA) adapter, or will I need to use some sort of mic
preamp? Or what?
If it looks like I know what I'm talking about here it's
purely an illusion.

If I get it right the only problem would be poor signal
level and awful signal to noise ratio... but it could be
purely an illusion...

Well, that would connect the two bits of my puzzle, but my
question is would that work? Would I get satifactory sound,
no sound, or poor sound (requiring a preamp). I need to use
several of these together so I don't really want to have
powered pre-amps for all microphones - too many power
sockets.

you will need mic preamps to get a decent sound.
wouldn't the obvious solution be a mixer that has as many
mic/xlr channels as you need and a rca/tape output...?

having several microphones and only one amp thingie...

basically i want to connect mics or amps directly into a
multi track hard disk recorder (fostex d80) or some other
multi channel input device that has balanced line inputs.
without using a mixing desk as they are expensive, do far
more that i need or want and generally have far fewer aux
sends out tha inputs.

end result: multiple mic/amp/pickup tracks on a pc ready to
mix in software sequencer.
