i remember that someone made a topic like "bought a microkorg today" and my first post was like "why haven't you bought an alesis micron?"
i was like completely sure then that i would go for an alesis micron no mather what.
but after reading a few reviews, listening to demo sounds, and using them for myself in stores my opinion has changed quite a bit making me oscilate between these two machines.
microkorg micron
let's start with the price - the korg costs 1500 zloty in poland, the alesis 2000 zloty - one point for the korg (price DOES matter)
the alesis seems the better choice when you look at it. - more polyphony, multitimbral, beat sequencer and richer sound (even good pads what i never expected). and a nice keyboard! the korg sounds more trancy, but - the korg has does one major thing - it sounds more ANALOG. and this might be the key.
i mean - why should i buy a hardware synth? analog sound! i don't need a hardware with fm synthesis or substractive - the vst emulators can get that sound already really good.
the korg has something more - more controls to use it live on stage - nice filters that you can tweak at once.
the alesis is a bitch to program with the 3 knobs and the multitimbrality and the whole setuping proces is quite retarded.
i would aperciate much any info or opinion on these hardwares - maybe some mp3's or wavs with sounds that might help me out (preferable fat basses)
thanks in advance !

tell me is it possible to use the microkorg as an instrument and as a midi controller at once ?
i would want to do something like this (which worked perfectly on a x-station) - i use the keyboard as a midi controller which goes through ableton live and goes back to the synth section.
so i press record in ableton, record a sequence and the loop it and it plays on the synth.
possible ?

As a regretfull microkorg owner, I have to pipe in.
THe microkorg sounds like cheap va. Someone told me that its because of the filters. Seriously. I thought it was great at first. Then I started getting more synths, and the microkorg sounded like a fart compared to some of the other affordable stuff I was buying.
The keys are too small. The matrix is annoying. You get used to it. But still, it aint right. If you are choosing between one matrix interfaced synthesizer and another, its not really that much of a matter. Aparently you can assign the three knobs on the micron to whatever parameter you like.
Seriously. All these people start doing the whole microkorg vs micron debate. I always ring in saying "spend the extra money, get the micron". People end up choosing the microkorg because its $100 dollars cheaper. As much as price matters, you get what you pay for. Personally, I will never buy another korg synthesizer after owning the microkorg, and then also the poly 800. The microkorg was one of the worst sounding pieces of hardware that I have owned.
But to answer your second question, yes, you can use the microkorg as a midi keyboard and a synthesizer without both notes being played. All you need to do is turn global off, and it will only play back notes on the midi in. Its the same with practically every synthesizer with midi.

wow ! thanks for this feedback. made me think.
what synths do you have besides the korg?
what would you recommend? (if the price might be a little higher?)

My gear list:
Synths: Yamaha SY22 Vektor Synthesizer DSI Evolver Akai MPC 1000 Akai s950 Roland SH32 (VA) Yamaha TX81z FM synthesizer Korg Poly 800 ------------------------------------------------- Effects: Alesis Quadraverb GT Berhinger Ultrapatch Pro Berhinger Eurorack 1002fx Behringer UM100 pedal Korg Kaos Pad 2 ------------------------------------------------- Ordered or are otherwise purchasing soon: Nord Rack 3 Yamaha 01V Mixer
Gear I have sold: Korg MicroKorg Novation X Station Boss DS330 Alesis midifex Alesis midiverb
What would I suggest you buy? An evolver. $550us. It costs as much as a micron, it has real analogue oscilators, real analogue filters, a built in sequencer that can sequence everything, and it sounds like a beast. you get subtractive and fm synthesis, and can modulate everything with the sequencer. There is no way you can get this sound from a computer, in any way shape or form. Its amazing.

Bad point tho, is no keyboard. Buy one of those cheap behringer controllers. Costs about $120 us for the 61 key version.

Well, if you want to do chords, you can set all four oscilators to center channel and then tune each voice to the appropriate frequency.
Seriously, this thing sounds better than most things out there, monophonic or polyphonic.

not wanting to sit on the fence but I've got both and think they're both good. They're different synths at the end of the day with different strengths - they're not that expensive either, why not get both?

Micron, based on the fact it's pretty mcuh the Ion (which I have) and that's bloody immense.
The microKorg is a good synth, but it can't do everything; the Micron can.

I don't have a proper multitrack recording device for a midi setup. That comes after the mixer.
Wait until then, when I can actually record songs and do mastering...
