Video microscopy and some gaming also hopefully. Wondering if I can knock out two birds...
Money isn't an object, it comes from National Institute of Health.

Are some better for importing and viewing video data while others are better for games?

Geforce 3 titanium for gaming and anything else under the sun.
Costs the GDP of a small country, but its rather nice.

I have a Geforce 2 with 64mb DDR and that costs about £120 now. Works brilliant on my 22" monitor :)

I have a GeForce 3 Ti200 (Hercules). Works OK.
ATI 8500 owners claim they have crystal clear picture which beats any nvidia chip.
And now Hercules' ATI cards are out in an unbelievable low price. I saw one for 224 canadian bucks...
go to Tom's hardware for reviews and tips.

ya the ati 8500's are supposed to have superior 2d picture.. and very close 3d performance to the geforce 3s...
plus the ATIs have some features nvidia doesn't (like truform), and are supposed to be better for video editing
the new ones come w/ 128 mb of ddr ram..

Consider a Kyro II based card too. It is cheap, brilliant 2D, fast 3D. Though not as fast as a recent Geforce 3, but it is working by a revolutionary theory when rendering 3D images. It is calculating the parts of the image that is visible, and rendering only that. While an nvidia is rendering everything, even a whole structure, or anything that is not even visible.
It is not that big advance until it is getting to hig resolutions. Then Kyro II is starting to win over the brute force cards.
