Missing your time?

Do some people miss their time to shine for one reason or
another? For example SM Pennyworth, the talented fucker he
is, was really shining a few years ago but now seems to
occupy the same space as many lesser talented folk in many
peoples minds.

Grinning Ape on the other hand is having his/it's moment now
and could blow up (as much as electronic music can blow up)
or not...hopefully the former.

What causes people to lose their shine? Is it that the
personality in their music matches a specific time or is it
simply a case of people get familiar and lose interest.
From a personal point of view music must mean something to
me when I listen to it...for a new track/album to do it I
have to feel it emotionally at that time after which
nostalgia is the key.

Conclusion: Don't drunk and post.

there's too much music that sounds the same.

It's hard for artists to continue to push boundaries and
produce new
work that interests their audience/fans. Only the most
dedicated or talented can do this over any length of time.
Others will "shine' for a brief period and then sink back
into the grey sea of mediocrity.

The times when I have had strong, deep and lasting emotional
respones to new music stand out so much for me that anything
less really dosn't hold my attention. I can't wait for the
next time it happens.........

lots of them come up with a good debut but either can't
match that with the next release due to lack of ideas or
just trying out with something that's popular at the
time..luckly we have aphex and autechre :)

I was thinking about this the other day. The way people are
recieved here seems, in part, to do with how often they
post. When Ochre was around a lot more, his tracks were
praised more highly. Now that he lurks more, even though his
music has got better, people seem less impressed.

Same goes for SM Pennyworth and Xanpha/Teapot (although I
must admit I genuinely did prefer his earlier stuff, even
though his later work is more polished/technically
accomplished).

"Is it that the

simply a case of people get familiar and lose interest."

I think it's neither and both. Music producers change, their
music changes and reaches different people. And the
listeners - their tastes change to.

There are also, of course, artists who produce the same
music over years and music listeners who listen to the same
scope of artists.

How long do you expect your time to last?

Classical and jazz musicians are in for the long haul - they
can produce well into their old age. They have roots and a
sense of history. They develop their taste and discretion.

Electronic musicians exemplify the worst aspects of pop
music - shallow, imitative, all transient fads and gimmicks,
and most of them probably have less talent and fewer skills
than Ashlee Simpson. They can't play any instrument that
doesn't have a "play" button. Of course they're disposable.
They're the zero skill minimum wage employees of the music
world.

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

I'd say at least half can play another instrument (talking
about people who are actually any good, even as amateurs,
not someone who DLs floops then "remixes" the tutorials and
that's as far as they can get), even if it is "only" the
piano. How do you think they can play keyboard synths?

And in any event, we can go back to the argument: If using a
drum machine/synth is "zero skill", why can't you
make anything as good as Drukqs, or as catchy as Alter Ego's
"Rocker"?

Now, I'm off to do some more pads and cut up breaks tracks
for BIYC in Reason.

There's a lot of elements, timing, luck, right people all
converging at that moment when one hits their stride making
music, when the inspiration falls into place, or at least
enough signs that point to potential genius, and that might
only happen once in your life. And then how you react to
that encouragement... I don't know, I've known quite a few
bands that you'd say (Ok, I'd say) "Genius", no two ways
about it, but they never break through beyond a certain,
limited level. And then, yeah, the moment passes, and even
the most devoted fan, after a while, moves on. And that's
Rock Bands, with sex and performace on their side.
Electronic musician, in the bedroom, doing the ocasional
laptop show. Fucking hell, no chance.

They play all the white keys, and then they play all the

black keys.

I must admit, that is a golden rule of IDM:

Never make a track using both black and white keys.
NB: Unless you are Boards of Canada.

I don't have time to address the other points as I'm working
on some Absynth patches for my latest SAW2-derivative album.

i agree with fleetstreet mostly about wanky generic idm...
except that i don't think that skill/technique is
necessarily related to quality in art.

You can't follow rules when making music...that's exactly
the reason most stuff these days sounds shite.

Personally I think the reason Dan is doing so well is
because of the way he approaches what he does...it a case of
fuck everything that is being released/unleashed at the
moment, he is just making music he feels based on what has
inspired him from the past...if he was following the 'rules
of electronic music production' he would just be another
generic wank bag.

Well there you go ruining my bull in a china shop troll-fest
by making a good point. This is true. As a matter of fact
sometimes songwriting and composing ability seems to vary in
inverse proportion to one's ability to weedle weedle wee on
an instrument.

Still I am extremely sick of musicians who can't string two
chords together into a progression hammering away at a drone
for 6 minutes and excusing it as minimalism.

there is also seeming to be a lack of enthusiasm amongst the
electronic community - i'm finding more people who have
heard of APhex Twin and Squarepusher but less who listen to
"IDM" or even know what this blanket term refers to. No one
seems to care anymore as the internet is now
overproliferated with musicians, and it's hard to discern
crap from quality, therefore listeners lose interest,
musicians lose enthusiasm, and music itself goes through
natural selection.
