I remember reading about this when it first became popular.
Aparently it takes a lot of energy to process foods that
have not been broken down at all through cooking.

But hey, whatever works. I generally use Woody Harrelson as
a guage for shit like this. If hes a big advocate, then I
know it will cause me to want to jump out of a 12 story
window.

that seems excessive.

not as weird as the show i saw about folks who take the raw
meat and age it for weeks until it's rotten and smelly...
and then eat it.

vsnares turned me on to it, it's basically the healthiest
thing you can do for yourself, people have even kicked
cancer by doing this apparantly

Sometimes I want to die in my bed,
All I can think about is "When are we leaving?",
Everytime I think of you I want a cigarette,
Man chooses himself,
Hero with a thousand faces,
It's the third night and the walls are shaking,
Boys buying boys,
Pleasure bringing pain, it's all the same,
I put my hand near my mouth so I know I'm still breathing,
So we joke about the TV set,
Calling it the "eye of Hell",
I would love to have people see what I see,
I would love to be a pillar of strength in my community,
A little order, a little grace,
Something new to fill up this place,
Live a thousand lives by picture,
Mark, this song is for you,
I'm a lousy lover - I give but never take,
Makes you go where you can't go, makes you want what you
can't have,
(repeats)
Live a thousand lives by picture

Raw food diet?
sounds not-very-good...

if you need to loose pounds full-speed probably it's better
to eat plastic and stones (raw) or simply to loose a huge
amount of blood (there are lots of funny ways)

now seriously, i love fruits, veggies and nuts but i don't
think i would be able to survive that diet...

i have lost nearly 2 stone in about 3 or 4 months, what i
did is cut out all carbohydrates, ie potatoes, pasta, bread
etc, and just replace any snack food like crisps/chocolates
with fruit, and any drinks like coke/tea/coffee/alcohol with
water or juices. gym 3 or 4 times a week, and playing 5 a
side football on other days. if you work hard at this you
will lose weight!

Snaresy diet, Vegiie diet, malibu and honolulu diets don't
work. I'm blessed with a trim from top to tails loving body.
For the rest of you, Food = energy. You can eat massive
pies but use the energy! Ha Ha! sorry. I'm not preaching.

The theory behind the raw food diet is that a lot of the
nutrition that leaves the food during the cooking process is
still there when you eat it raw. The irony, is that it takes
a lot more energy to process raw food than it does cooked
food, so a lot of the benefits of the raw food diet are lost
due to the fact that you body has to work three times harder
to process it.

and still watch tv?

Of course i love my mom, but she i into a lot of new wavey
kind of health things. Most of it is harmless, and probably
beneficial. She is a Reiki master, she operates a
thereputic massage clinic and she has recently started to
get into Cranial Sacral therapy (which i find highly suspect
but, yes, harmless)..

But the most wonkey thing I've caught my mom doing is
flashing a laser on herself and then on her food before she
eats it. She claims that the laser does something to the
molecules in her own body and in the food, and helps her
body recognize the the food and digest it more efficiently,
or something like that.

She claims that a friend of hers lost a lot of weight doing
this.

But i find this wonkey for a couple reasons.

1. the laser that she uses can not possibly penetrate her
food or her body deep enough to affect a significant number
of molecules.
2. the laser is not powerful enough to have much, if any
effect on the molecules.
3. my mom only weighs like 110 pounds.
4. i can find NO documentation on the validity of this
practice.

LONG STORY SHORT:
these flashy diets and new wave healing practices are often
based on hear-say and anecdotal evidence. People desperate
for a magic bullet want so badly to believe that these
things work that they do not question the validity of them.
And even go so far as to claim that Science (being evil and
ignorant in their eyes) couldn't possibly prove or disprove
them.

I love my mom but when she whips out her laser and shines it
on her food, it takes all my will power not to shout at her,
"WTF is wrong with you lady!"

No. I was saying the raw food diet is all fine and good by
the sounds of it, but most of any of the benefits you might
gain are wasted when your body tries to process it. Its kind
of like skipping when you are trying to get from one place
to another. Sure you may get there a little bit faster, but
its not as comfortable as walking and makes you look like a
retard.

but you haven't proven that it's bad to have the body work
for the digestion, and lots of work of the body cant cancel
out more vitamins because it's two different things.

Well, from what I know, the harder your body works the more
fatigued it can become. I have no evidence, because I get
most of this information from people I know that do a lot of
research into these diets. I don't do the research myself.

Take that as you will, but a raw food diet sounds like an
awfull way to eat, and if I were going on a diet that seems
as arduous as eating only raw berries and nuts, then I would
want to find a bit more return than going up three steps and
falling back two.

I understand about the vitamins and nutrients. I also know
that things that are hard for your body to process and that
take a lot of time are also bad for you, and a lot of
nutritionists suggest towards foods that do not put any
strain on your digestive system.

I would think that wouldn't be the best thing for someone.
nuts aren't a complete protein and are pretty fattening
compared to other plant-based forms of protein. nuts in
conjunction with grains usually make a complete protein, but
I would imagine it'd be trickier for your body to combine
the two rather than from a full protein source like
soybeans. I'm not sure if you can eat raw grains, but I
would imagine it wouldn't be broken down very well.
also, despite the high content of most crucial vitamins and
minerals in raw fruits and vegetables, you'd still need to
take vitamins to fill in for the few vitamins/nutrients that
are completely lacking in strictly nuts/seeds, fruits and
vegetables. B12 for instance is devoid in strict vegan
diets.. but even when someone doesn't take a supplement,
they still get small, animal-derived amounts in fortified
cereals, etc. A raw food diet would be completely lacking of
B12. The body has reserve stores, but eventually if it
depletes, your body's ability to create new cells stops.
that's why you read all kinds of stuff about babies being
born all fucked-up because of stict raw food and certain
vegan diets. I'll shut up now.
