I'd wager 99% of deviantart is filled with pictures exactly
like yours, and trying to make them stand out by tacking on
a "proverbial" here and a "mystic" there isn't going to
work. It makes you look silly. I'm not saying there's
anything wrong with taking time to find a style, my photos
are every bit as nothing-y, but it is just fucking
pretentious titling this kind of... stuff. I'm not trying to
be any more of a dick than usual, it's honest advice.

I like The End. Titles on photographs does come across a
little self important though.

Points: 12540 Status: Addict | Followup to Dannn_: #01864047 | Show recordbag

i'm glad you like that one

just one thing:

so we shouldn't name tracks or paintings then? it's just a
way of identifying a photo. these aren't just casual snaps.
i'm serious about my photography. thanks for your comment
even though I don't entirely agree

offline Dannn_ from United Kingdom on 2006-03-20 13:31 [#01864062]

Theres no real reason but when i clicked on one and saw
'proverbial eye' I just thought WTF a little bit, it took
something away from it. I mean they are good photos and all
but the titles are a bit melodramatic. I guess Im fine with
naming photos to identify them but if there was a realist
painting of an eye called Proverbial Eye i'd feel the same
way.

ok, so you don't like the name, fair enough. what name would
you prefer?

surely if it was just for identification you could just say
what is on the picture, for example - "eye".

you choose to do more than just that which implies that
there's some kind of meaning or thought behind your
pictures, as if there's supposed to be some deeper layer.

the title becomes a guiding force, where as normally you'd
expect the image or content to be able to speak for itself.

and seeing as they're still "just" pictures makes the titles
dangerously close to pretentious.

the art of these pictures doesn't lie in hidden meaning (I
think), but in choice of subject, or composition, or
colouring, etc.

also try to learn to take criticism more lightly - you
snapped at belb while wasn't even being mean in his
wording.

I mean, if you do take your photography serious and you
thought that was bad you're in for a world full of hurt.

"pretentious".

none of the names imply anything other than what they
obviously appear to be. take "mystic tree" for example. I
named it that because to me it looked mystical. the photo
"sky veins" looked like a sky of veins. I'm not trying to be
fancy or pretentious. i think you seem to have got the wrong
idea about my thought process. belb got snapped at for being
pinickity and presumptuous.

"proverbial
adj
Definition: conventional, traditional"

put that in your pipe and smoke it

because it looked so conventional/traditional that it was
interesting enough to photograph? what

My grandad names all his photographs and he's not a
photogrpaher,he names them things that are easily registerd
like 'mikigardenbw' or ''squirrelfence'' which would be my
cousin michaela in the garden in black and white,or a
squirrel on a fence..so i can see your thought process...

BUT

Sort of like captions on still life/profile pictures ,and
such...it can be viewed as pretencious...l see this point
also ,because you are dramatising something so simple..it's
the simplicity that should dramatise the photo.
but then again, you could only be trying to put an emphasis
on something...maybe something you feell others would miss.

i dunno...they're just captions...words..words are just
words.
they mean something differant to each of us.

i havent bothered to read much of this thread. what i will
say is naming the pictures takes away some of the mystery
from them. you look at a picture, and you interpret it in
your own way, and think your own thoughts, which is what
makes it intertesting. by labelling it, you are putting a
certain direction on it. i dont know. there is a picture of
an egg, say. then you call the picture 'hard boiled egg' if
you didnt name the piece 'hard boiled egg' nobody would have
known that the egg was hard boiled. it is a rubbish example
but do you understand?
