after being all geared up to buy the lacie 1tb harddrive on this page i noticed this notice when i tried to buy it:
www.lacie.com sells and ships products only within the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii.
bugger. anyone have any links to similarily huge harddisks, that could be shipped anywhere in the EU (specifically Ireland, of course)?

You can buy it from the uk lacie store or apple.com but you have to pay 589 for it...which is a bit of a rip (you probably knew this already)

If size isn't important and you would be happy with a NAS unit you could have a look at something like the Buffalo Terastation. Probably a more secure route to take as well with the RAID implementation. We've been using one in work and it is fucking great. Amazon are selling it for 475 at the moment.

if full postage for first shipping it to someone within the us that you know (possibly even one of the wankers here) and then having them send it to you (as a gift to hopefully avoid having extra tax added to it) still keeps the price below what you can get it for 'round here (there), that is an option.

I wouldn't buy that. I bought a Lacie 300gb external USB2 with it's "Unique ultra-quiet, heat-dissipating design" and it failed after less than a year. It was just a regular maxtor inside with a nice-on-the-outside but-dodgy-on-the-inside metal case. You might be ok with this one but I wouldn't risk it. Go with ecnad's suggestion.
