I know that i have to get out there and do something with
myself...and that no-one else will do it for me.I know i
need a job,and that to get that job i have to make an
effort.I know if i want my skin to look good i need to eat
properly and stop smoking, and i know if i want a gorgeous
body need to exercise and go out into the sun some-times.I
know that if i want more friends and a better social life i
need to acctually go places, and be friendly and open.

so why don't i acctually do any of that.because i want to be
that person...Why am i not?If i know what needs to be
done,and i want to do it..why don't i?

I can't acctually figure it out..

anyone else do the same?...Promise yourself you'll make your
life better some-how...and then,*Phut*..It's another 6
months down the line..and your still in your chair,Online
and smoking at silly hours?

I try to and I do in most cases. It's the first step that
counts the rest follow. I wasnt really over happy to get a
job knowing i'd have to wake up every morning, but after
that, it's cool and you get attached to people and you can
even feel love. Im still smoking too much and eating like a
pig. Everything on its time !

You only need a composer to make a song, the lyrics are
there already.

Ha ha, quality.

Anon: You need to get off your arse and do the stuff you
want to in life. It doesn't just "happen" to you. Some of my
mates are now in their mid twenties and have achieved
absolutely fuck-all bar racking up debts (and they openly
admit this; it's not just my observation) and it's not even
like they enjoyed the time spent being wasters.

I'm not saying you have to get a 9-5 and go to night class
to better yourself, but decide what it is you want out of
life and do it. Making things you want to happen is usually
nowhere near as hard as you imagine once you actually start
them.

Well, for me it was very important to stop gettin' stoned as
soon as I woke up. With a sober mind you will feel more able
to take action. But I don't know what the hell you smoke...
My Marihuana is now just for the end of a hard day!
And it's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like
a dog!

you need some rap wisdom. download these songs.

Nigga, you need to git up, git out and git somethin
Don't let the days of your life pass by
You need to git up, git out and git somethin
Don't spend all your time tryin to get high
You need git up, git out and git somethin
How will you make it if you never even try
You need to git up, git out and git somethin
Cuz you and I got to do for you and I

+

I tell you one lesson I learned
If you want to be something in life
You ain't gonna get it unless
You give a little bit of sacrifice
Ooohh, sometimes before you smile you got to cry
You need a heart that's filled with music
If you use it you can fly
If you want to be high

(outkast - git up, git out + the roots - sacrifice)

Go and look at people who are older than you and wasted
their life this way when they were your age. It's a good
incentive/mental picture to have to spur you on every time
you feel like giving up. I know people who at thirty who are
just leaving college and starting their career now. I know
BLiar wants us all to work till we're 70, but I'm fucked if
I am. If you leave it late before you start work proper, you
won't have any other option.

I think a problem with modern society is that there's too
much of a safety net. Sure it should be there for people who
genuinely need it, but it unfortunately forms a comfort trap
for a lot of people who don't need it and breeds indolence.

Quate:
In the words of the ancients, one should make his decisions
within the space of seven breaths. Lord Takanobu said, "If
discrimination is long, it will spoil." Lord Naoshige said,
"When matters are done leisurely, seven out of ten will turn
out badly. A warrior is a person who does things quickly."

When your mind is going hither and thither, discrimination
will never be brought to a conclusion. With an intense,
fresh and undelaying spirit, one will make his judgments
within the space of seven breaths. It is a matter of being
determined and having the spirit to break right through to
the other side.

My dad completely wasted his life due to drugs etc but i
haven't seen him in ten years.I think i should try and find
him...I think meeting him would make me determined not to be
like that... But then i think maybe that'd be too much to
handle...Meeting him.

Yes, I agree with that mentality. Whilst you certainly
shouldn't rush into things completely unconsidered, it's
often better to get started and make the wrong decision,
rather than deliberate for hours. At least that way, you
have narrowed the options down and will have a better idea
of the right thing to do.

If you've seen the film "Touching the Void" (if you've not,
hire it; it's great), there's a line in that that sums it
up, "In a situation like that you've got to keep making
decisions, or else you'll die. You've got to make decisions,
even if they're the wrong ones."

There's a great philosopher who also wrote some music, he
was well ahead of his time. I think his words fit best here.
The great Kenny Loggins:

Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone
Headin' into twilight
Spreadin' out her wings tonight
She got you jumpin' off the track
And shovin' into overdrive
Highway to the Danger Zone
I'll take you
Right into the Danger Zone
You'll never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You'll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go
Out along the edges
Always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity
Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take you
Right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone

i think of it this way - the moment you set out on changing
yourself, the moment things start changing. it really is as
simple as getting off your as and doing what you know you
need to do. nothing is going to happen unless you put
yourself there to make it happen.

it's a perpetual thing, i believe. once you start making
progress in your life, it's hard to revert back to the
stagnance from before. however, it is important to rest and
give yourself credit.

maybe start out with something simple? i mean, you are not
going to turn your life around in a day, a week, or a month,
maybe not even a year. but if you start with something
small, maybe walking a couple blocks a day and eating salad
instead of a hamburger, for example, you have started and
are on your way.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean.
I always set myself targets and tell myself what I want to
do/happen and it very rarely ever does. I just start making
excuses for myself so I don't have to get the stuff done
that I wanted to do. I think maybe it's partly down to my
goals being unrealistic. For example, not giving myself
enough time to reach my targets. I often know exactly what I
want my end result to be, and I have ideas of how I want to
get there, but I think the key to being successful, is doing
what somejerk said, and making realistic goals and taking it
slow. Don't expect sudden transformations or it will all
seem too daunting.

you don't do it because you rrememberr that it's too much
like harrd worrk, and once you've done it all you'rre still
going to be unhappy in yourrself and that anyway you'rre
just going to die in the end.

there's always someone who just can't understand what you're
talking about. i have similar tendencies, but on one hand i
have a skill for subtle manipulation of events and on the
other i am married to someone who is in many ways the
opposite and she tends to bring out the more active elements
of my personality.

but how do you advise someone to find self discipline,
beyond saying "get off your arse and do something"? first
off, try to identify what's supporting the bad habits. too
much weed? try killing your internet service for a month or
two. if you really want to change, you might find it
happening to you sooner than you think.
