The vinyl version is coming my way.. at least I hope so as
Warpmart send me a Tresor.103 LP instead of this..

Anyway, this is a release full of sweet melodies (glitchy at
places), phat beats and a subtle depth in the musical
layers.
I personally like the fact that it's obvious who influenced
him, like for example Brian Eno's - The Big Ship, Autechre,
Aphex Twin and Plaid. So to me he belongs to the next
generation of IDM.
I can't wait to hear something from the new album!

It seems to me that the title is influenced by William
Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

btw, the vinyl version should be added once v2 is up!

it sounds a bit derivative to me, or internetartist
i mean all those melodies sound 'lush' with all the reverb
but i don't know what the glitches are good for, im not too
moved

I like Ochre's music a lot. Maybe it's because he's just
plain good or maybe he's derivative and I haven't yet heard
any other music that sounds just like his. I do think it's a
bit much to expect every new electronic album to break
completely new ground like Aphex has done for most of his
career. There can only be so many pioneers, you know? No one
seems to mind that rock music today is just a rehashing of
what was done in the 60s-80s. I think aesthetics is right to
say that ochre is just part of the next generation of
electronic. It doesn't bother me that his influences are the
exact same as what mine would be if I was making electronic
music right now.

it just occured to me that I have a couple of Ochre's songs
from the new album on my computer and I've never even
listened to them...

lots of people mind the rehashing of rock music, what are
you on about?

yeah, actually you're right, a lot of people do mind. But
those people are the minority compared to listeners of rock
music on the whole. Once enough people get tired of it,
maybe it will force the rock-music industry to change its
formula.

the description isn't up anymore, but when warp announced
the stock of this record in their weekly product update,
they kind of put the record down even though they were
trying to sell it.

this was a negative post, i shouldn't of said anything.

the negative nancy flu of xltronic has got me

...which is why they're now selling it for a fiver! you just
can't shift shit music, eh?

and while we're collating negative reviews, i do believe
boomkat took the time to point out multiple times that the
record was hardly revolutionary. quotes include
'inoffensive', 'this isn’t exactly groundbreaking stuff',
'formulaic crunchy numbers', and finally, 'unchallenging'.
and guess what... they still have it in stock too!

OCHRE - Sound System Bangers Vol. 1
Repeat
CD // £ 4.99
OCHRE - Sound System Bangers Vol. 1, Repeat

Following a rapturously-received performance at london’s
de rigeur “wheels instead of hooves” electronica
showcase, the hotly-tipped Ochre releases a spine-tingling
debut EP that will become an essential purchase for all fans
of melodious i.d.m., maths degree and shabby beard not
required. Ochre’s music is full of challenge and enquiry,
yet it’s emotive electronic beauty creates an atmosphere
accessible to all, with icy gloss, lush tones and succinct
beats taking precedence over harsh effects or
over-complicated editing. The open nature of his sound
structure has the kind of visual suggestion that should, in
an ideal world, find him soundtracking the next epic david
attenborough natural history series. 5 tracks across almost
30 minutes, very nice indeed.

Revolutionary and/or groundbreaking it doesn't matter to me,
this record is ace.

the review over at Boomkat isn't as bad as that:

"More innofensive tricky IDM from Toytronic – the debut
from Chris Leary under the Ochre moniker. This isn’t
exactly groundbreaking stuff, you feel you’ve been here
countless times before, but nonetheless the production is
superb and Chris has a good understanding of melody
structures that sees him through. The finest pieces here are
more toned down, ambient stretches that work so much better
than the formulaic crunchy numbers you’ll already know so
well. All in all, good if unchallenging material, the debut
Ochre release “Sound System Bangers Volume.1”
disappeared in a flash and Toytronic has a habit of making
its releases collectable before the month’s out – so if
this is your bag ...don’t sleep."

Will someone please take a moment to explain to me how
electronic music is at its best when it's "offensive"? Are
they referring to harsh, grating tones that aren't pleasing
to listen to, or simply throwing in lines like "c'mon you
cunts lets have some afx acid" ? in either case, i'll take
some more inoffensive IDM please.

research is an amazing track.

I really think it's more about the word "inoffensive" as in:
tame, not very exciting, won't make anyone raise an eyebrow,
etc.

them using the term "inoffensive" does not automatically
imply that "offensive" is the best option.

yeah, the musicality really lets it down. perhaps if it were
either unlistenable testosterone-soaked breakcore with nary
a discernable key or chord, or high-brow art music
consisting of nothing but sine waves above 12kHz, it may be
considered breaking new ground. but no, he's gone for that
well-worn path of tunefulness. granted, 3/4, 5/4, 7/4 and
11/4 are used throughout the album, but if there are no
128th-note amen snare rushes or dsp wibbly bits, then i'm
not listening.

i would describe ochre's music and quite elaborate =
partiucularly in a melodic sense - with rattling beats and
distinct tunes weaving through the lush backgrounds - good
music for watching cell division take place in a speeded up
time :) he tends to use sounds that do hit the pur note
rather than sounds that have a more dissonant or off-key /
detuned nature and in that sense has a similarity in terms
of melodic purity to very early electronic bands/artists....
technically - very very good and knows his stuff

catch him @ sheffield uni (UK) - this saturday

word - Ochre owns, just doing his thing. can't wait to hear
the new cd. benbecula have a couple of streams of tracks off
the new lp Lemodie. sounds a bit different - i can see why
it's not on toytronic. suits benbecula tho.
