Being deaf is no excuse for walking in front of a train or road. I regularly cross the road with headphones or earplugs in, but I make damn sure to look both ways before I do. Sorry, but if you wander into the path of an oncoming vehicle (I mean, it's not like the train could have run wide on a bend/whatever when it hit her, is it! ;-) it's your own lookout. You don't deserve sympathy just because you're a pedestrian and not because you're deaf, either.
I went out at lunchtime and a car tried to pull out in front of me and when she spooned it up, nearly got t-boned by something in her own lane. Had she got hit, people's opinion would be; dozy cow, she got what she deserved and brought it upon herself. It's no different if you're on foot.
All IMO of course. I didn't find the story particularly amusing, but neither did it elicit much sympathy from me either. I feel sorrier for the train driver (who statistically speaking is 50% likely to no longer be able to bring himself to drive trains again) who may well lose his livelihood over this.

not funny, not darwin awards worthy, not evidence that the girl who was killed was stupid.
sympathy is for the people who lost someone they loved, not for the person who died.
two worthless cents...

"A train can sneak up on you," he said.
Sorry, that did make me chuckle. The mental picture of a dirty great diesel freight train stealthy sneaking up like a cat on a mouse is hilarious.
Imagine it trundling forwards; she senses something behind her and as she looks over her shoulder the train stops quickly. After a moment, she is reassured that is just her imagination. She continues on her way, the train starts stealthily moving towards her again. This continues for some time, until she realises it has been following her and she breaks into a run. The train lunges violently at her, landed on top of her.
God, I'm sorry, I sound like w M w. :(

There was a Miss Disabled Texas in FHM a few months back. They were almost all just really pretty women in wheelchairs. I think it's good for disabled people's self esteem to have beauty pagents like "normal" people, but why not just let them enter regular competitions? It's not like miss world is judged on how well she can hear, or that deafness in any way impairs your aesthetic beauty.
