well, if you've got it saved, try restarting the computer. my soundcard sometimes gives me problems similar to that, in other applications.

Close ableton, rename your vstplugins folder and try opening it again. If it opens again but complains about missing plugins, you know one of the plugins was preventing it from opening.

I mean, try opening your set that won't open, after renaming the plugins folder.

Ableton 5 is notoriously buggy.
I heard a rumor that they circulated cracks of it that would crash after a certain ammount of time and only start working once you loaded a purchased version. Great marketing, and a good way to use the warez community to work in your advantage, but still, not cool if the music that you are working on falls victim.

I had this problem with a new track I tried to finish. Apparently the old, saved track were able to render without any problems.
But, try using voxengo recorder on your master output. It will let you record anything to .wav file. Saved my ass for sure.

Ableton took a crap on my Mac too. I had to make a new user-account and move my shit over to the new one, and flush the old settings down the computerized toilet.

The decided to change their demographic from the live perfomer to the semi professional studio producer with a lot of the newer versions of ableton. The earlier stabilities and such were lost.
