Nasty sounds against young people ?

I've heard in the news this morning that some shops in
England are equiped with a system making a nasty loud treble
sound, in order to make groups of chavs standing in front
the shop go away. They also said only people under 25 years
old could hear it. Is that really true ?? That's scary.

this equipment costs around 900€... to make people above
25 run away, two loudspeakers and some merzbow blasting are
the best solution

this is a fact. i read about this a while ago. for some
reason, once you pass a certain age, your ears don't pick up
on as many frequencies as before.

"The only problem is that the youths have moved on and are

This sentences sums up the situation very well...

Yes, shop in my town where chav kids hang round outside was
the first in the country to have one.

It's pretty stupid, because I've got fairly high freq.
hearing (I can actually hear bat's "radar" sound) and it
irritates me when I go into the shop (although you can only
hear it outside) and dissuades me from shopping there. The
bloke who makes them came across as a bit of a cunt in an
interview I saw and he actually uses his own children to
callibrate the things.

Personally, if I was a chav kid, I'd just chuck bricks at
the thing until it shut up.

As combo says, it only makes them go elsewhere. So, other
shops have to buy them and once they've stopped hanging
around outside shops (or the nippers learn the hi-freq
blocking merits of ear plugs), the parks/carparks/bus stops
where they'll congregate instead will need to buy them. Bit
of a moneyspinner for the bloke making them really.

I'd be suprised if some smartarse doesn't take them to court
as a breach of human rights. It's "broadcast" from the front
of the shop, but you can hear it in the bus stop right
outside. I'd be well pissed off with it if I was a teenager
legitmately catching a bus, with nothing to do with the shop
and I was subjected to the noise.

Its wierd that teenagers hang out in front of stores. I know
that junkies like to hang out in front of stores and in
store alcoves and such. I would be a lot more worried about
junkies than teenagers, as junkies generally need to find
one way or another to make their money to buy drugs, and
that usually isn't going to work. It would be funny if the
one thing that was detering the neighboorhood junkies from
panhandling and breaking into the store was all the
teenagers that were hanging out front.

I was also thinkin' there must be something illegal about
that... I mean, if I take my monitors out the window and
start blastin' the street, sure something wrong will happen
to me...

Generally when you remove one thing from an ecosystem,
something else moves into its place.

Yep. Why not play a ghettoblaster really loud with something
annoying on loop right outside the store (for example, in
the bus stop I was talking about), when they ask you to turn
it down, ignore them. When they call the police, point out
the police that the store is doing the same thing to you.

The shop concerned is in a residential area. Can you imagine
if you were a teenager living next door and could hear the
high pitched whine every time you opened the window?

Bear in mind that 90%+ of the people who can hear this are
legitimate users of the shop/surrounding area and only a
small number cause trouble. Rather than a blanket approach
of rough "justice" like this, you think it would be better
for the police to just deal with the ones who were being
anti-social.

If it was any other minority group (other than perhaps the
elderly) that were being discriminated against in this way,
people would be up in arms.

yesyes, but they should just walk on, it's just a few
seconds inconvenience then
if it was your (old) tv doing this i bet you'd sit through
it for watching that great show you want to see anyway
it's hard to battle stuff like this, people get in arms
about bans on flocking together on the street (dont know the
english term) even more (rightfully so imo)
also the shopowner doesn't have any obligation to society to
handle this nicely, or to worry about them going elsewhere:
i don't blame him at all for doing this
it is a real crappy solution but therefor a signal as well

"yesyes, but they should just walk on, it's just a few
seconds inconvenience then
"

My point was/is that the sound isn't just audible on the
shop owners premises. It doesn't even just cover the ground
immediately outside his front door. If it can be heard in a
bus stop right outside, people waiting for the bus have no
option but to endure it. As a teenager I had to use
buses; it was my only way of getting around. I wouldn't want
a kid who is causing no problem, just sitting waiting for
his bus to be subjected to this noise.

With regard to "if it was your (old) tv doing this i bet
you'd sit through it for watching that great show you want
to see anyway
" I have to disagree. If the effect is so
minor and easy to ignore, it wouldn't be so effective at
making the kids move on. The whole point is that it is
irritating to the point of causing discomfort.

This is horsecrap. Ceri has many good points here. You
shouldnt be able to do this because it will affect people in
a vacinity. I too have hyper style hearing. I would
seriously destroy this thing.

Unfair to the general public in an eearshot range.

I was actually looking at buying the house next door to this
shop earlier today. Couldn't hear it in the house, but in
the garden, particularly the front, I could hear it. Fuckers
put a cage around the thing to stop people smashing it up. I
reckon a letter about this duplicated and sent to the
council, spar, local paper and the estate agent should get
it removed (not that I'm particularly keen on the house,
it's just the principle of the thing).
