You know, that bassline thats use a lot in rephlex's music
and was the staple of acid-house. It sounds a bit like
squelchy water (if you can have that?!). If you don't know
what it is, its that sound in the middle of that Christina
Milian's song (not that I'd wathc mtv...)

Do any of you think it should be put to rest? I've heard far
too many of them use far too unimaginatively and its a
wonder they still sell for what they do.

I wouldn't say they suck, they are just quite boring now..

I think that when used in the right place they still sound
good. Check out some of Squarepusher's acid tracks -
Dedication Loop for instance.

... you couldn't drop the 303 without dropping half the
music we all listen to... so it's clear it is always worth
the use (not if used badly/without imagination)

No way, the 303 is CULT ! Actually Iaint a big fan of the
typical 303 sound.....but, its like saying we should put
Guitars to the rest, cuz they are so overused....

Monoid: Guitars are not as inflexible as the TB303
Come on, turn off your second oscillator and modulate the
filter if you want acid bleeps, you will sound slightly
different but that makes you more original. Almost any synth
can do it and you're not stuck with that inflexible
sequencer.

I miss my SH101... but always dreamed of one day owning one
of them silver boxes...

I love what AFX has been doing with the 303 recently -
taking the sounds into the digital realm and processing the
sounds futther...taking Acid to the new level...

I have a 303, and use it ALL of the time. It's not so great
to use as a stand alone, but with some effects, and
creativity, I love it. It does piss me off when i run out of
ideas because just a 303 by itself is pretty stale.

The wild thing about the 303 is the face that the people who
created it saw it a replacement for a Bass Guitar ... I
mean, how many Bassists have you heard that sound like
that!! I really wouldn't wanna try & squeeze a "real"
sounding bassline out of it...

And the fact that a single machine, years after being
discontinued could spawn a whole new genre of music (and
provide a starting place for loads more sub-genre...) is
amazing...can't think of many other machines that achived
such an iconic status - the 808, 909 perhaps...

Headline in The Sun this weekend.."ACID ATTACK ON THE
BLAIRS"... almost bought a copy just for the headline (The
Sun is generally a scummy little rag not even worth the
effort of wiping your arse on..).....
