I honestly don't know anyone that didn't like the film. A blind purchase is indeed recommended. Get it, right now :) (and if you don't end up smiling like a loon at the end of the film you are clearly dead inside emotionally)

I used to like it, but then I also liked absolutely dreadful stuff like Requiem for a Dream or something.
I can't stand the acting anymore in this one, it's all so fucking overblown, and it makes me want to hit Audrey Tautou with a shovel.

the director is a prime example of someone who exercises style over substance.
because really, theres nothing special about the story of amelie. not one fucking thing. its how he presents the story that is interesting. i liked amelie but its still just that to me.
the same thing with city of the lost children. amazing visually, but the story, while more interesting than amelie, is minorly present at best.
this is really obvious with some of his really early films. which dont even have a basic story--they are cold and sterile.

I like the part where Robocop begins reliving his death scene, makes you realise that Robocop is not all a machine, but rather Murphy trapped deep inside, and then he gets up and walks off, absolutely brillant.

i don't know if it was just because of my mood when i watched it, but it was heavily irritating.
actually - when the movie ended i hated amelie.
she kind of helped people - but not in a way you actually should help them - she just lied the whole time over.
and the whole thing with that man who selled vegetables - okay he was rude - but nobody should make things like she did.
but i have to admit that i probably missunderstood the intentions of this movie being just some romantic fairy tale meant to cheer people up.

I dont see how the film makes a comment about french people.
I liked it a lot, and I kind of hate the character Amelie too. The whole thing is overly cute in that specifically french cutesy way, her stupid little smirk haunts me sometimes. But I still really enjoy watching it, it progresses in a very smooth way, simple humour, nice ideas. Its fun.

Yes, irritating at moments, especially when you know Jeunets other films and know that he excerises same tricks all over again. However, in Amelie he bocomes very accessible and I too shed a tear during the scene in the phone-box.
Requiem is fucking pretentious and populist, but still works on some levels and there's no way I'll admit that it's garbage. I may not want to see it ever again, but it's still a pretty good movie. That tune played by Kronos is unforgivable crap though.
If you don't agree with me, you may be going through your rebelious phase.

Amelie is about being an individual and appreciating the little things in life. It's a cute movie and a sweet message. It's not mind blowing, but neither was lost in translation which was nice, but terribly over rated. Mostly due to nepatisim, IMHO. I love films amd I did take something away from Amelie. Not including the hard on.

honestly, how could you have overlooked the story in "city of lost children"? it has an elaborate, expansive story that works on numerous levels. it absolutely astonishes me that you could have such a strong opinion after having overlooked so much.
but then again, i though "amelie" was a memorably sweet and entertaining movie about how people deny or create happiness for themselves.
