has anyone else seen them live? i saw them last night and
it was unbearably intense, it sounded like insane tribal
music with chanting and screaming and someone had given me
five hits of acid.

i can't remember the last time i saw a show that was so
visceral and overwhelming, nor a show that so consistently
evoked a specific drug experience. it was strange
especially since i haven't taken acid in more than ten
years, but as the sounds were swirling past me i was
immediately transported to that state of mind.

incidentally, let me add that this is an animal collective
thread, not a drug thread. drugs are bad, stay in school
etc.

Same here. I saw them a year ago - it was ritualistic and
hypnotic. At one point I felt this overwhelming urge to
participate, so I just started fucking screaming. It caught
on, and soon most of the crowd was doing the same thing. I'm
seeing them again next month.

they're from the united states, new york i think. their
recent album is the only one i've heard, out on fat cat.
it's eclectic and unusual and unique, but even though they
played some songs from the album, the live effect was very
different, totally physical and as i said powerfully
immersive.

even if you don't like their recorded output, i'd recommend
seeing them live. massive to say the least.

rarndaraki, any impressions of the show?

I went the the record shop a while ago wanting to buy
Astrobotnia. Upon realizing that it wasn't there and how
dumb it was to go to a record shop for something like
Astrobotnia, I found an Animal Collective record, which I
fondled for a while but didn't buy. Should I have bought
it?

plaid,

my thoughts are mixed. i loved the first few tunes they
played. then they went downhill and doddled around with
droney noisey stuff. the last few tunes they played were
good.

all in all i have to agree with plaid, i wasn't stoned or
high...animal collective has a religious/spiritual thing
going on.. like a cult...but fun.

i saw "the books" a few weeks after this show and though
it's not very fair to compare a show in a huge space like
first avenue with the tiny intimacy of the little club the
books played at, "the books" show was far superior. i left
feeling totally at peace and strong in my musical ideas.
animal collective had to much of a hipster vibe and
insincere stage prescence to brew up those thoughts and
feelings.

i found out about the books show after it happened.

i don't know anything about a hipster vibe, i didn't detect
any of that at all, from what i could tell mostly animal
collective just played instruments, but frequently i
couldn't see the stage at all. i think i'm probably about
as far from hipster as i can imagine, though.

admittedly at one point i was pretty certain that the guy
operating the samply keyboard thing was dressed in a bear
suit, turned out there was no bear suit at all. i would
describe this lack of bear suit as absolutely sincere.

yea, i suppose "insincere" stage prescence is a bit of a
wrong thing to say. what i'm trying to get at, i feel like
they're trying to show this side of music that's all about
like, ehhh, freaks in the woods dancing around the campfire
/ spiritual things, but in reality they're total hipsters
that know exactly what they're doing. i just don't like
that type of two faced thing. i mean, granted i'm sure they
understand what they're doing and i'm sure they know that
they aren't this geniune oddity from another demension, but
in comparison with "the books," whom are genuine and don't
press any notion other then average guys good at music, i
found "the books" image or what have you to be much more
welcoming.

you can't fake the interdimensional hoo hah, i say. they've
got it going on and off.

yes yes yes... the interdimensional hoo hah is a tricky
subject and who am i to explore the sincerity of those
seemingly possessed by it's magicness? but, well, i have no
point. eh?

anyways, gotta go to class. nice talking with you. we
should go get some beers sometime. i turn 21 in a few
weeks. ;)

it'd be like having a few beers with your parents, but what
the hell.

a show you really should have seen was the rose ensemble
performing the victoria requiem. saw them perform it at a
seminary chapel in st paul. they also sang a contemporary
piece that was amazing. why do i mention it? when i put my
hands on the keyboard it all just comes out.
