i looked through the other threads regarding renoise, the tracker program, but none of the threads satisfied me.
does anyone have any tips for starting out with renoise? i used it for the first time yesterday and got frustrated pretty quickly. i don't think i've used any other tracker software before. i'm an avid Live5 user, but i'm always looking to expand my knowledge and style.

try live, you may be suprised at how easy it is. you can get a demo copy from ableton.com that you can do just about everything in - except for save and render.
i love live, but i want to try other apps. i think i read that enduser uses renoise and i really like the sound of his music. i am having problems getting live to sound how i want with my jungle/dnb tracks. then again, i think my issues are with eq'ing, not the program itself.

imo, renoise is a great tool for composing drum tracks, synth lines or what have you, but in terms of over all compoing, its a bit of a burden, especially if youre used to live.
have you used fruity loops before? renoise is like the pattern editor in that, but vertically, so time is going up and down. each column is a different track, and you type or play in each note you want. if you dont have a midi keyboard, i the bottom row on your keyboard (z thru /) serves as the white keys, while the row above it is the black ones.
renoise can sample, time stretch loops, play vstis, use vst effects, as well as a few decent in host ones, ass of which are drag-and-dropped from the browser into the track.
but the great thing about renoise is that you can get unbelievable intricate and control almost any perameter, each of which has a two to three-didit code, which you gotta look up in the reference manual. print it out and itll make things alot easier.
thats about all i can come up with. sorry, im stoned and havent used renoise in two years or so, but thats only because im lazy.

thanks hedphukkerr.
i have used FL and had fun with it. i'm done with that shit now though, especially after i learned of Live's Simpler and Impulse tools.
i'm going to keep playing with it and see if i can get a better hang of it. thanks!

i use renoise now and then for making drums then writing straight to .wav... drum loops and other kinds of loops. i just love the interface. its a real treat and a stellar change from sidescrolling sequence. i find it very fast (loads in ~6 seconds on my POS laptop, versus live which takes ~30) and the interface is a real treat to use; no clicking, midi support, and just a few other treats of the interface i cant name off of the top of my head. took me almost a month to get really speedy with it.
it is awesome. but, yeah, each little event you can control so much and automate a ton of parameters and its real cool, there really are a ton of advantages to using it. and like headphukker said you can load use vst instruments or effects and etc.
primarily my favorite part about it though is the no-click interface..

i think i just need to figure out where everything is. most programs are similiar in terms of functioning, but with different interfaces.

I use Buzz almost exclusively, so I understand how hard it is to get started on trackers. I remember trying Renoise once.. I gave up for some reason or another but trackers really do take an entirely different mindset. Once you get it then you can really fly with it though.. I can't use Fruity, etc. to save my life.

Tell me if im wrong, but i think the idea behind it is pretty smart, aphex twin was saying how linear cubase was, and i think he has a point.
I know venetian snares uses renoise, and thats how i come to figure he can do so complex beats, which are so alien, because they don't stick to a certain time beat, well they do, but the samples he uses are always in a different order, something like that.
I don't really know, thats just my guess, but i have a demo of renoise, and i do want to master it at some point, i can see myself getting really good at it.

Try another tracker first.
You will learn a lot quicker, and all the stuff in renoise will make a million times more sense to you later on if you do it that way.
Take your time and learn how to track, your songs will like you for it : )

Tracking is the schizznittiest! Renoise is a little confusing to me as well and I use Buzz which is the greatest, unstablist mindfucker I can find besides going all dank on some macro sound language shit. Now you have confused ME! Thanx.
