It's impossible to not like it, the ones who say they don't
are only doing it to be true-underground-necro-idm and feed
their elitist ego.

Autechre have more or less invented a genre, so I have to
give them a nod of respect, but Aphex Twin, he did about 2
or 3 really nice, if inconsistent, albums in the early
nineties that earned him some sort of 'prodigal genius' tag,
which was a bit over the top. His albums from 1995-present
have, at best, been acceptable solid 'IDM', but in no way
have they been classics, or in any way exceptionally
memorable or influential.

For the past ten years, Aphex has been off the boil. I think
he peaked around "SAW II", and his last great record was "I
Care Because You Do". Most people seem to agree on this when
the subject comes up in conversation or on message boards
like this. Since then he has been the most consistently
overrated electronic artist in the world, based on a couple
of years of early notoriety at the beginning of the 1990's.
He clearly believes in his leadership of the genre, by
naming his offshoot label series "Men" (he means 'separating
the men from the boys' presumably), and the fact that his
recent project was titled "Analord" (also suggesting that he
is the leader of the genre. which is pretty arrogant, and
laughably not true any more, not for several years in fact.
it's not likely that many musicians have actually been
influenced by any of the tracks from his last couple of
(especially forgettable) major releases, which have proved
more than anything that he is resting on his laurels, and
not particuarly giving a shit about the people who buy his
music, because he thinks he's always going to be on top.
sadly that's not the way the music world works, and there's
a hundred more exciting artists around now than Aphex and
his little gang of brown-nosers.)

Discuss.

"you dont say!!!!"
"who was it?"
"he didnt say"

yeah Autechre really started something. Aphex probably
founded drill-and-bass with HAB and RDJalbum, but since then
he hasnt really done anything progressive.

i'll just say that i think bill burroughs is very dumb and
that analord is originally a luke vibert track

i won't even bother typing out why i think he's wrong

richard james gave the analord title to luke vibert. do some
homework.

offline staz on 2006-02-16 11:21 [#01842486]

nope, he did not

also, you must be a pretty touchy wanker to start whining
the 'arrogance' in the name 'analord', a simple play on
words is hardly something you take seriously
