yeah, that site is amazing. it's been around a while, but worth reposting..
about as close as we'll get to seeing a 'last person alive on earth' scenario.

i thought some of these pictures were amazing... obviously the circumstances which caused them are dreadful and the aftermath doesn't bare thinking about, but the atmosphere in that place must really be something else. i love looking at pictures of derelict and abandoned urban wastelands, theres a lot of good urban exploration sites out there as well. if the walls could speak, and all that.....

Yeah, I love that shit, it moves me. Big urban exploration webring if anyone's interested.
These Chernobyl pics definitely have an unreal feel. I saw a multi-player map based on the Chernoybl facility and the surrounding areas, I think it was made for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Regular urban exploration is mostly pretty boring to me, but stuff like Chernobyl is just... legend. The silence is very emphasized in those pictures. It's just totally surreal and abrasive.

Understandable, but for me, one of the most appealing aspects of urban exploration is the that very lack of legend and lore. My imagination tends to go a bit wild and I make up my own ''history'' for each setting.
That was cheesy.

Are there any pictures from the actual meltdown event?
Like, on that site the dude talks about the people watching the huge glowing crack in the core, and the glowing cloud above the facility and shit.
I want to see that!

i believe there is an explanation on the first page in the paragraph called Roentgens.. the biggest number on her Geiger meter pictured was some 500+ microroentgens and she was not exposed for a long time.
nice pics. i'm living not so far from the place but not knowing much about it.

i was a kid then. it was june, all sunny and warm. one day all of a sudden each kid at school had to drink a spoonful of iodine. Some puked, some cried cause it tasted terrible. Even though we lived in western part of Poland = quite far from "ground zero"- people were scared.

i escaped the iodine drinking, seems. my family lived rather close then and they were enough educated to get away as far as they could (Melitopol) on the very day they learned about what had happened. I was five yrs old then. They sent me alone at first, to grand mother, then sold the house. Later they told about crowded buses with people carrying household like gypsies running away from the region.

Not too long ago I watched a documentary on robots being used to do hazardous waste cleanup in places like reactors and they included a part on Chernobyl. There was a film shown of the immediate aftermath of the meltdown with people in hazmat suits fighting the remaining fires. The narrator made a chilling remark; "All of the people pictured in this film are dead."
