From Planet Mu's website. "The Gasman: This One's For You is his best album yet.... please buy it cos no-one bought the other 2."
Mike P used to post here. Did he ever say anything about how much a Mu-artist sells? How is the new gasman btw?

This kind of music doesn't sell. Thats why so many labels like this are closing down right now. Now that all the fans who were there when it looked like the next big thing have moved onto the next big thing, and most of the labels aren't going to survive.

I blame the fucking internet. It's destroyed distribution networks and independent retail stores.
Music is a de-monetized commodity.
Looks like the future is netlabels.

And now for the bright side!
There's more good music than ever available at the touch of our fingers, artists you never would have heard of before are invading and usurping mindshare formerly occupied by major-label schlock, and services like iTunes, Bleep, Beatport and especially Emusic are providing quick, convenient, inexpensive downloads that compensate the artists for their work.
It's a bright, shiny future for everyone, folks!

So when is Mu going to ink a deal with Emusic? I'd download some of their stuff.
Better hurry, guys - Mille Plateaux (2005 catalog items) and Ninja Tune just started showing up. Last one in is a
rotten egg failed enterprise!

except for in nyc, i don't know of any indie retail stores that can compete with the big chains around here. they don't have the capacity for the selection and they can't give reasonable prices. on the other hand, i see lots of indie stores benefitting from amazon and ebay, as they can sell their used cds and stuff.
you're right that music is becoming de-monetarized, which is good for "music" as an abstraction, but terrible for artists and ultimately, the consumer. there's also fucking clear channel, which is going to choke the life out of the underground american music scene eventually. i don't see underground music going in a good direction economically-speaking.

I always assumed clear channel is the one that will crumble. They lose a lot of money because of file sharing.

i don't think the majors take even close to the kind of losses that indies have. also, indies can't complain about mp3's because it isn't cool to their fanbase.
but i was really referring to how venues across the country are becoming more corporatized and less artist-friendly. there's an idea that "well, i don't care if the artists don't make money on their albums because they should make all their money on live shows" which, as any band could tell you, is pure nonsense. generally, indie bands are lucky not to be heavily in debt at the end of their tours. and the trend is that it's getting worse and worse.

At least it's VBR mp3 at Emusic, which is so close I have to A / B a track on mp3 versus cd or flac on good headphones to notice a difference.

the standard will be lower quality, because generally, people won't care. also because in time they won't know any better.
