Doesn't really matter, although I might be leaning on the
older side.

you might try to tune in to bbc 6 music (a british digital
radio station) and listen to craig charles (the bloke from
red dwarf believe or not). he plays a whole range on funk
etc on fridays from about 8 GMT

cant name you any specific records or artists, which is more
what you are after?

oh man--my knowledge of old funk stops with funkedelics and
prince :D

but there's this awesome album titled 'caliente' from last
year by ark (guillaume berroyer). there are some songs with
vocals as well, one of them by jamie lidell. it's incredibly
funky!

Allen Toussaint's ''Life, Love and Faith'', ''Southern
Nights'' and ''From a Whisper to a Scream'' is just about my
favorite funk/soul stuff from the 70s, packs great tunage
into funky/groovy tracks. He produced a ton of funk and soul
so I dunno if he's all that obscure, but he'd definitely
underappreciated.

Check the funk releases on Juno, i can also advise you James
Brown and Curtis Mayfield but i'm far from being a
specialist !

not the most obscure, but the Pulp Fusion series has some
rather funky gems here and there

Not too obsure but zapp is pretty awesome. How about voyage?
Its obscure, but its more disco/world music.

Look for the wildstyle instrumental soundtrack, ju par
universal orchestra, and any of the dusty fingers
compolations for some good funk that isn't well known.

Now what kind of funk are you looking for. Party funk or
soul-funk?

Bill laswell put out an axiom funk album, but axiom records
always end up sounding like axiom records other stuff.
Contribed and meaningless.

Yeah. Look for the dusty fingers series. Its a compilation
series for hiphop producers that has some of the "classic"
sould and funk songs that aren't very well known, but are
being sampled by everybody. They are pretty much good
listens straight through.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2006-02-04 16:50 [#01834728]

Oh yeah, there are about 15 different dusty fingers comps
out last I counted.
