you wrote "bands" so i thought you meant not only electronic
acts. like autechre and afx. sorry.

King Crimson are a prefect example of growing old but not
musically. and not going soft. they use machine drums and
lots of electronic equipment so i think they might be
allowed in xlt music discussions once in a while.

i thought you know allmusic. all music, tolst, or so the
myth says.

:)

i wonder what Nirvana would sound like today. or if it
existed at all, since Cobain had gone kinda soft musically
before he left the building.

it is that way for many bands indeed...

listen to other new bands, or stick with the old releases...

the thing is nirvana sounded good mellow as opposed to some
other people..

uzim, yeah, i definitelly try to hear as much of new bands
as i can, but i think this getting softer thing is quite
common in music nowdays in general..

if by mellow you mean either ripe or soft i'd agree as for
Unplugged. In Utero was always the last shout of a depressed
man to me. and it sounded really hard.

i'd risk an opinion that rock bands after Nirvana generally
softened. or maybe i lost the heart for most of rock music
in general after their collapse.

i'd agree though that RDJ went totally soft with analords.
and thank god Autechre didn't. well, it's hard to say if
Untilted is soft or hard. or anything but quality electronic
music.

maybe it's a matter of increasing sensitivity, or
openmindedness. a lot of soft stuff might've made me think
"new agey boring fluff" years ago, now i do indeed listen to
more less conventional, softer music.

when i was 18, i was very critical of programmed,
synthesized music (i thought everyone should play a guitar,
apparently).

also, i don't have the same emotional mindset i had when i
was younger, i'm pretty well settled and have resolved a lot
of conflicts, and i've found that music that communicates or
evokes conflict no longer interests me.

examples ?

i was quite the same.

but another thing is i get bored very easy with Nirvana or
Pearl Jam and can't get bored with Jesus Lizard or
Soundgarden. i loved listening to all of them once. people
and tastes change.

the last older rock record i listened to was a couple weeks
ago, the first album by swervedriver, "raise", which came
out in 1991 i think. it still sounds great.

i still listen to some rock music, for example interpol.

most accurately, i listen to a much wider range of music
these days, but then again i've had the time to accrue
experience and music.

some of the softest music ever, early renaissance choral
music, is also a current favorite.

here are some examples off the top of my head that i once
liked very much, mind you i've not lost interest in all
their work, i just don't connect personally with a lot of
the tracks anymore, mostly the songs about emotional
conflict, anger etc. of course many tracks by the following
don't fit the bill.

big black
the cure
the smiths
ministry
skinny puppy
my bloody valentine
depeche mode
nirvana
red lorry yellow lorry
joy division
the chameleons

They're probably reaching the age at which they've realized
they've done their work in the music world and might be
considering retirement from it.

Now it's time for a new generation to take action and make
their mark on the music world.

i am with you, tolstoyed! mellowing out has gotten popular
and its shit, basically.

obara - i disagree that in utero is a softer album than
nevermind, that's totally insane. it's way harder than
nevermind. you must be measuring "heavy" in terms of
compression or somthin

and getting older is no excuse. i'll bet it's more a
reflection of your lifestyle than it's about appreciating
heavy music. you don't have to be an angsty teenager to
listen to good heavy music. ...fact!

for me the problem is that much "heavy" music *is* about
anger and angst. i'd much rather listen to something like
merzbow than heavy rock music. it's not that the music is
too heavy, the style just doesn't interest me.

also, are you saying that people are "mellowing" because
it's popular to "mellow"? i can't see why mellowing out is
shit. nothing is more sad than a middle aged guy at a
screamy rock show pretending he's a teenager.

there are many, many styles of heavy metal, for instance.
but fair enough if you don't like it. what can i say about
it.

also, are you saying that people are "mellowing" because
it's popular to "mellow"? i can't see why mellowing out is
shit.

i think it's the new trend, yeah. it's obnoxious to me that
bands seem to think that it's wrong to be loud or noisy or
ugly. or that "quiet" is better than "loud". one is not
better than the other. if you're in a rock band, you'd
better know how to rock. it's like when the beatles had
their loud, screaming rock music, and then softened and made
bullshit records like sgt peppers. the latter is boring ass
music.

nothing is more sad than a middle aged guy at a screamy
rock show pretending he's a teenager.

so music appreciation is completely dependant on age for
you? you reach a certain age and then it's time to grow up
and move on from what you used to be passionate about? time
to settle down? that's utterly boring to me. i don't
understand this point of view. it says that you don't care
about a form of art enough so you let the trappings of
"adult life" block it out.

no, i'm saying that you shouldn't feel compelled to "stay
young" by obsessing over music that's made by and for kids,
trying to be someone that you're not. and honestly i think
it's strange to think that people are making quiet music
because it's trendy. you really don't think that people are
making the music they want to make?

if you know one thing about me, maybe you don't, it's that i
think music is subjective and personal and i don't think
anyone's right or wrong for taking pleasure from music,
whether i like it or not.

also, my point included that there is more "heavy" music
besides cliche ridden rock music. i know you don't care if
i like this or that band.

strange that you would argue so much in favor of being open
minded, but at the same time condemn music that you don't
favor as "bullshit" and "boring ass music."

oh my, one day you'll learn that there is a grain of salt...
and sometimes you should take it...

i'm saying that you shouldn't feel compelled to "stay
young" by obsessing over music that's made by and for
kids,

how many people in their twenties, thirties and older do you
know that have read Harry Potter or went to see Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory?

trying to be someone that you're not.

well, of course there's something wrong with that. but what
i was saying was based on the observation that some people i
know found themselves at a certain age and gave up on what
they liked just because they thought they were "too old".
they're not being themselves, they're ignoring part of
themselves until they can bury it.

and honestly i think
it's strange to think that people are making quiet music
because it's trendy. you really don't think that people are
making the music they want to make?

right, i am saying there seems to be a trend in music now
where there are more groups doing quiet stuff for purely
pretentious reasons. and many of the indie or underground
bands fit into this and, maybe they like it, but i think
they are really just doing it to get popular.
