Just finished reading the collection of short stories We Can
Remeber It For You Wholesale which had some amazing ideas in
it.

I've heard that Palmer Eldritch is one of his better books
and hope to get round to reading that someday.

Apparently they've just made a film version of A Scanner
Darkly.

A Scanner Darkly, was my favorite book of all time, until I
read VALIS (Also by PKD).

Its truely amazing.

Read the trilogy (the novels aren't related, its just a
trilogy, because its the last 3 books he wrote, after having
a "religious" experience.

If you don't know a lot about philosophy/religious
philosophy, I'd advise looking into before reading VALIS. I
was lucky enough to take a philosophy or religion class the
semester before I read it, and if I hadn't, I don't think I
would have understood half of what he was talking about, and
even still, I kept having to put the book down, go online,
and look up works and religious/mythological
ideas/characters.

To give a very superficial rundown of the story, a man goes
insane after the death of a close friend, and basically
shuts himself up, trying to write a rationalization(to an
insane man) for God, using religious, philisophical, and
mythical characters and ideas.

the other 2 books in the trilogy are "The Divine Invasion,"
and "The Transmigration of Timothy Archer"

also, when you finish the trilogy, read Radio Free Albemuth.
It was the first book he wrote in this line of books, but
the publisher rejected it, so we went back and wrote VALIS.
There is a lot of similiar plot things, and ideas, but its
different. It is good, but VALIS is definately far superior.

‚A scanner darkly' reminds us of the strange thing called
multiple personalities. Philip K. Dick is narratating a
story about someone who was becoming ill by means of drugs.
He split up into a paranoide computer-like thinking genius
and a depressive emotional guy, who is a lonely stranger
looking for having fun with no direction in life. Dick let
this be explained by means of a splitting of the two
hemispheres of the brain. This is a very interesting theory
represented here, because in reality schizophrenia in
general let people tend to divide the world into
‚calculating' and ‚emphatizing'. Dick just shows us an
extremal case, but the key to the solution of this disease
is unanswered here. There's needed a mechanism, which let
both parts of a brain - logical and emotional - interfere in
some let's say natural or usual way

PKD was truely on one. All of the books mentioned above are
worth seeking out - VALIS especially is a very interesting
read. Other titles not mentioned yet which i would
recommend are - Flow My Tears the Policeman Said, Doctor
Bloodmoney and The Man in the High Castle.

Although often written in a quirky style these books are
interesting in that they speak more about todays fragmented
reality a lot more than any other sci fi written at same
time.

if you aint into reading too much, nor too up on philosophy
etc,....then dont start with a scanner darkly.
he has way more "accessable" novels....though a scanner
darkly is one of his all time greatest
a great starter is his collected short stories.
each packs a great idea per day as they are very short to
read and will get you loving the man and understanding how
his writing progressed.
then you can delve into the larger novels which youd prefer
to read, based on your chronalogical experience of his
shorts.

i received his collected essays and philosophical writtings
from amazon today......... great so far!

really rate this guy. id love to list what iäve read but
all i can remember is "ubik","the three stigmata of palmer
eldritch", "galactic pot-healer" "a scanner darkly" "time
out of joint", "vulcan hammer"(..) and so on. i'm probaly
missing around 3-4-5 books more but cant remember any
names. bah!

also read this biography, called "i am alive and you are
dead", which was very powerful. .. well thats not exactly
the word - started getting into quite weird moods because of
perceived parallels.

honestly, good stuff.
