No... not the Bjork track...
I wanna discuss headphones.
What kind do you use?
What does it mean xhz - xx,xxx hz on the box?
Are there any headphones that actually put out 1hz? I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and the lowest I saw was 10-23,000hz...
links and rants welcome. and yes, fuck you too!

my player is teeny and I move around a lot so I've used in ear headphones for about 9 months. I originally had a pair of sony futopia (or whatever the fuck.. eh the $35 shit) headphones, but the cord on them is shit and when they died I bought a pair of shure E2Cs. I guess I'm rough because, though these have much sturdier design, I've damaged one bit. $70
I'm all for in-ear.

Do the in ear type sound as good as outer ear? I haven't really used any inner ear except the cheap old ones that came with the 1989 GameBoy, and I don't think those count... I was actually thinking about buying some in-ear ones yesterday, but I didn't go through with it, I was looking at some new ones from phillips I think... they had some new type of foam thing that directs the sound into your ear or something... then I saw these other ones that are supposed to have a surround effect... damn I can't remember what brands they were...

no hmm I wasn't clear enough, I'm not talking about earbuds. These suckers seal out other noise and funnel audio directly at your eardrums. Sounds scary but the insulation can let you keep the volume lower.
anyway it'll be obvious once you see a picture. They're earhttp://www.shurestore.com/earphones/eseries_e2c.html#ove basically rviewplugs with sound emission.

oh I meant to say in ear sound fucking badass and some people prefer them for audio quality alone.
I've never even sampled bigass high quality headphones since I can't be arsed putting up with their size.

I've just lost my sweet in-ear Sennheisers. I couldn't find any other common brand that doesn't want to fuck you. All the Sony's, Philips's and Panasonixesxexcexws have these easily breakable wire and after a few months, or even weeks if it's cold outside, one of the phones stops working. Trust Sennheiser.

To answer 'What does it mean xhz - xx,xxx hz'
This is the frequency response of the earphones and no you won't find any that put out 1hz. Around about 4hz will make you crap your pants (literally) at a good volume, but it costs a lot of money to reproduce those sorts of frequencies.

xhz - xx,xxx hz is a rough idea of what the headphone is capable of putting out. Human hearing has it's extreme limits of no lower than 20 hz and no higher than 22khz. Many will not really 'hear' 20hz. Same goes for 22khz, for adults I think it's more around 18khz. '10hz-23,000hz' is pretty much meaningless unless it has a dB constraint, such as '+/-3db', that is, it will not vary more than 3dB away from the actual sound. I think for speakers anyway they put the end of the range where at -6db, this might be a different number of hz than what they have listed as the response range (or vice versa, response/range, I forget).
There are headphones that you might find listing a response down to 5Hz, such as Beyerdynamic DT880's.
The in-ear phones sneakattack is talking about (not 'earphones') are good for their intended application. Isolated, detailed, accurate sound in small package. However, they will not be as good as circumaural headphones. This is because the shape of the ear picks up spacial cues from the sound. Binaural recordings are one way of simulating this effect with in-ear phones. This is where the recording is made with mics that are in someone's ears. The only problem with that is that people's ears are different and your brain is very sensitive to the way your ears change sound.
Me, I have Sennheiser HD-600's for home listening, and some of those $30-40ish Sony in-ear's (some confusing model name like MDXv230923) for portable listening.

Portable? Nah. I wish I had some good quality headphones that weren't big that I could use w/ my mp3 player, but with size comes quality trade-offs.

Choose a price bracket and application (portable, club DJing, studio, etc) and then get the Sennheiser model that fits those categories. It is almost always better than the competition.
Even if you can't find one that fits it exactly, email their technical support and they will suggest something.

I have the etymotic er-4's. They are awesome. Bass, spatial representation is all there. Detail is incredible. My only gripe; taking them in and out of your ears is a pain in the ass. I want to get ear molds made so it's easier.
