WORST APHEX ALBUM

offline Krendo from Leicester (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-01 13:48 [#00107536]

Might as well imitate a good idea.

Selected Ambient Works 85 - 92
Surfing on Sine Waves
Selected Ambient Works II
... I Care Because You Do
Classics
Analogue Bubblebath 3
Richard D. James Album
Caustic Window Compilation
Melodies From Mars
Drukqs

Which is the worst of these? (Did I forget any?) I reckon
AB3 has to be up there, or the Caustic Window stuff. Mind
you, Drukqs isn't too great.

This will probably come as a shock to most but: Druqks

I would have to go with Surfing on Sine Waves.....

But shit...does Richard really have ANY "worst" pieces?

=)
BOC forever

Come on, Ken, some of the stuff on AB3 is useless. Track 1,
for instance, is very ordianry. Most of the album is all
right, but none of it really grabs my attention. As for
Caustic Window, at least four tracks on this are shoddy:
Clayhill Dub, AFX 114, that silly ironic rave tune, and
Humanoid Must Not Escape.

Surfing On Sine Waves is a great album.

So, apparently Drukqs it is. And what about that title?
Fucking preposterous. I actually think half of it is
brilliant but the rest is just sketches that should have
never left RDJ's harddisk.

What don't people like about Surfing On Sine Waves? Every
song on it is great. I can see why some might not like
Quoth, or Supremacy II. But the rest is brilliant.

For me I dont think it is a matter of me hating "Sine
Waves"...Perhaps I choose that one because it is the one
album I have heard the least and do not own....

=)

I just think that all my other AFX-albums are great. But
Surfing....? Not great.

Do you guys have the US release of Surfing On Sine Waves,
because that has two extra tracks. If so, what are they
like?

offline KEN from BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-01 14:32 [#00107596]
Points: 1844 Status: Regular

ab3 krendo is a wicked little compilation as is the caustic
window..agree in terms of completed albums they dont run
well-but they're not albums they're compilations...which
contain some great music. and come on krendo, there aint
THAT much difference between sufing and ab3-pretty confidnt
the tunes on each were made around the same time/same
production etc.

anyway, i think they're ace. oh and listen to clayhill dub
through a huge pa. thats my advice on this shite friday
afternoon ;>

offline KEN from BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-01 14:34 [#00107599]

they're good-especially red ruth school. quite bassy.

offline Krendo from Leicester (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-01 14:37 [#00107603]
Points: 360 Status: Regular

I like the idea, Ken :)

I don't have a big PA system, though.

You're right about AB3 and Surfing coming out at the same
time, but I don't think AB3 is anywhere near as good, apart
from track 3 and track 13. The background track to Garden of
Cinmiri is good, too.

But I'm jealous of the fact that you get to listen to AFX's
stuff on big speakers. I only ever listen to it on my puny
little stereo, and even then only when none of my friends
are around. They just tell me to turn it off. Especially my
room mate.

offline KEN from BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-01 14:42 [#00107613]
Points: 1844 Status: Regular

ooohh-the caustic window stuff does sound crappy through a
normal streao-but theres some serious bass on that
compilation!!-needs to be indulged LOUD!

to be fair i used to hate ab3, ive only really got heavily
into it recently.

see im not such a big fan of i care because you do!! see!!??
what the fuck do i know mate!!! ha! ;>

those as being "bad".

AB4 is very weak, but I don't think it's an album. The first
track is disgraceful.

I love the first track on AB4. I don't know why but I do.
I use it to open alot of my "energizing" mix CD's.

I have a friend who I'm trying to convert slowly to Aphex.
He thinks AB4 is really good, including the first track.

offline Krendo from Leicester (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-01 15:33 [#00107725]

You do? I like the beat, but the track just doesn't go
anywhere. I'd use Entrance to Exit instead, if it's energy
your looking for.

offline TrevorGod from Toronto (Canada) on 2002-03-01 15:38 [#00107732]

When I go wakeboarding I have AB4 song 1 cranked while I'm
still on the dock. Everone around can't stand the song and
my friends and I occasionally scream along with the
whooooooo!. Entrance to Exit usually ends up on the disc
later.

classics is a fantastic album...

...i have listened to both discs of drukqs in one sitting
and didn't struggle - it reminds me of this pissy article i
read in a trendy magazine saying that most of his music is
unlistenable and that's what makes it "cool" -- i was forced
to laugh at such crap
