2005: Your greatest musical discoveries

offline Sclah from Freudian Slipmat on 2006-01-12 04:27 [#01816829]

We have done lots of best-of lists for 2005, but what was
your greatest personal discoveries of previously released
music that year?

Some of mine:

Talking Heads
Steve Reich
Mogwai
Slowdive
The Fall
Dettinger
Godspeed You Black Emperor
Sonic Youth
Manitoba / Caribou
Stars of the Lid
Lali Puna
Yo La Tengo
The Jesus and Mary Chain

Tip: Search for folders created during 2005 in your music
collection.

Way, way too much to recall. But from '06 I can safely say
Califone. I had some stuff from before, but I just recently
started listening to it. Absolutely brilliant.

good thread! : )

i discovered the Melvins, Pavement, GusGus, Air, DJ Shadow,
the Stooges, Alice In Chains, the Black Keys, Jude, the
Chemical Brothers, the Hafler Trio, Ksiezyc, Quasimoto, A
Tribe Called Quest, Rjd2, Johannes Heldén, Gang Gang Dance,
Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto, De La Soul, A Tribe Called
Quest, Tarentel... got a lot more into Beck, Eels and
Blackalicious (i already knew them before, but now i love
them)... started getting into hip-hop somewhat too... i'm
still probably forgetting a lot of major ones here.

the first stars of the lid album (their best of what i've
heard)
marsen juhls

nathan michel "the beast"
breakestra
interpol "antics"
eluvium "an accidental memory in the case of death" and
"talk amongst the trees"
setzer split 12" (w/kettel) and ilkae remix
xela "tangled wool"
laraaji with brian eno
pub "do you ever regret pantomime?" and ">single"
marumari "the wolves hollow"
various jamaican reggae from the 60's and 70's
quinoline yellow "cyricack parasol"
rhythm & sound (first cd compilation)
sleepy "foob"

Valentin Silvestrov will define the year for me, I can't
remember having such a dick-hardening, mind-altering musical
enlightenment since like, I was getting into The Beatles or
Black Sabbath or something. The other big ones (mainly
artists with unique and large bodies of work that I had fun
digging into) were Peteris Vasks, Mort Garson, Desormais,
Allen Toussaint, Aidan Baker, etc.
